How to become a commercial manager There are several routes to becoming a commercial manager. You could complete a university or college course, an apprenticeship or apply directly to an employer for work. Common pathways include: Studying for a quantity surveying undergraduate degree (or related subjects such as building studies, construction engineering management). Gaining experience in administration, management or accounting and then starting as a junior project manager through a graduate traineeship. Completing a higher or degree apprenticeship in project management (around four years), open to anyone over the age of 16. Applying directly to a construction company if you have several years of project support or administration experience. You may need a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card to work on a construction site. Additional skills Strong analytical skills Good communication skills Excellent time‑management skills Good business commercial acumen Qualifications GCSE 9–5 including Maths and English, A Levels and previous experience Salary Newly trained commercial managers can earn £35,000. Trained commercial managers with experience can earn up to £91,000*.
