Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist (Part time/ Fixed term) University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust The closing date is 15 December 2025 We have a vacancy for a part-time 12-month position within our established and supportive team of SLTs, who work solo and jointly with other children's community services such as OT, Physio, Complex Needs and the Specialist Assessment Service (SAS - for autism diagnosis). We welcome applications from experienced band 5 SLTs who have completed their NQP competencies and established band 6s who are looking to further develop specialist level skills. UHB provides a Multi-professional Preceptorship Programme for all newly appointed clinicians, through which they receive additional support from the Trust's Professional Development and Education Team. As a band 6 SLT you will use secure clinical skills to assess, manage and discharge children between 0-18 years, within a shared pathway and caseload system, working in clinics, homes and educational settings in the area. We support active participation in Clinical Excellence Networks meetings and are a research active trust with opportunities for supported study at master's and PhD levels. Main duties of the job Assess, diagnose, and manage communication, in appropriate locations; referring onto colleagues for dysphagia needs. Develop specialist knowledge within areas of clinical practice as per service needs and as planned in annual appraisals. To raise the profile of the SLT Team by networking. Maintain accurate case notes and records according to HCPC, RCSLT and Trust standards. Distribute written reports in a timely manner to families and professionals, as needed, including those under relevant Education Acts, e.g. EHCPs. Work as a member of inter-disciplinary and inter-agency teams. Liaise with professionals, including those in Education and voluntary Sectors. Maintain current knowledge of SLT developments and needs through CPD activities. Provide advice and support to clients and relatives/carers. Organise own caseload and identify needs, notifying the specialist or Team Leader, of issues relating to clinical decision making or service development. Organise and supervise the work of assistants/volunteers. Cover for colleagues' absences, as directed by the Team Leader. Represent the team at Trust-wide level following negotiation or election by colleagues as appropriate. Carry out any other duties in line with the responsibilities of the post at the request of the Clinical Leader. Employees may need to work at other locations within the Trust to meet service needs. Person Specification Qualifications Recognised Speech and Language Therapy degree License to practice & HCPC Registration Membership of RCSLT GCSEs (including A -- C grade in English & Maths, or equivalent) 3 passes at A level (or equivalent) Experience Able to assess develop and implement appropriate programmes of care, author reports and evaluate outcomes and treatment to meet the needs of the clients Wide range of experience with different client groups at undergraduate level Knowledge of and adherence to national and local clinical guidelines Aware of rules relating to confidentiality and data protection and shares information within these constraints Demonstrates knowledge about children's communication difficulties Sound understanding of SEND Code of Practice Able to identify areas for own personal and professional development and take steps to meet those needs Knowledge of, and adherence to, national and local clinical guidelines Awareness of and works within local, national, and professional standards Developing specialist level skills in at least one area of clinical practice, such as speech sound disorder, cleft lip and palate, and complex communication.
