Band 6 Physiotherapist Specialist Surgery

Overview We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic experienced band 5 or band 6 physiotherapist with an interest in working in specialist surgery at Heartlands Hospital. The role includes providing therapeutic input to the vascular and general surgery wards, working within the specialties of upper and lower GI, ENT, urology and vascular surgery. The successful candidate will have excellent clinical skills, a flexible approach, organisation and time management skills along with experience working in surgical physiotherapy. You will work within a team of specialised physiotherapists, occupational therapists and therapy support workers, along with other members of the MDT to provide holistic and comprehensive therapy input to a wide cohort of patients. You will join our dynamic team of Therapists who strive towards holistic recovery and regaining independence following surgery or illness. Applicants will be willing to participate in the departmental respiratory on‑call rota and 7 day working rota within specialist surgery. Responsibilities Provide therapeutic assessment, management and treatment to surgical patients at Heartlands Hospital, using excellent clinical reasoning skills to deliver high quality, patient‑centred physiotherapy input. Demonstrate clear understanding of patient pathways and the importance of timely and effective physiotherapy intervention to ensure best possible outcomes. Communicate effectively with patients, especially in challenging situations, and act as an advocate for their care. Collaborate with the wider MDT to optimise patient care and contribute to service development, education of staff and students. Participate in the 7‑day working rota and the physiotherapy respiratory on‑call rota. Qualifications - Essential Diploma or degree in Physiotherapy. Registered with the Healthcare Professions Council (HCPC). A levels or equivalent qualification. Good general education standard, including GCSE Maths and English grade C or above. Evidence of CPD including recent postgraduate training relevant to clinical speciality. Qualifications - Desirable Member of a specialist interest group. Attendance at a Clinical Educators course. Experience within the speciality area. Experience Clinical experience managing a caseload within surgical physiotherapy, including elderly and frail patients, respiratory, neurological and musculoskeletal conditions. Experience working on a physiotherapy on‑call service. Experience working with student physiotherapists and assistants. Ability to analyse complex clinical and non‑clinical facts and situations, plan, organise, formulate and adjust complex plans. Ability to supervise and delegate work to physiotherapists, assistants and students. Additional Criteria Ability to provide and receive complex, sensitive and contentious information. Empathise and reassure patients. Persuade, motivate and negotiate effectively. Communicate when there are barriers to understanding. Contribute to clinical education of less experienced staff. Demonstrate enthusiasm, vision and a desire to achieve. Committed to developing expertise within physiotherapy and clinical speciality. Forward‑thinking and professional attitude. Physical ability to manoeuvre patients and equipment daily. Resilience to frequent exposure to distressing/emotional situations. Ability to work as team leader and as part of a multi‑disciplinary team. Motivate and develop the team. Contribution to the 7‑day weekend service, extended out‑of‑hours and overnight on‑call respiratory physiotherapy service (including NIV). Interest in promoting physiotherapy to health professionals and other agencies.
