Band 7 Senior Physiotherapist (Team Leader) Specialist Surgery Closing date: 18 December 2025 We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Physiotherapist (Team Leader) to work within the Specialist Surgery team on a permanent basis at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, part of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. UHB specialist surgery service provides highly specialist, cancer and non-cancer work and is the leading regional organ transplantation service. You will have the opportunity to work with patients across a variety of surgical specialities and perioperative pathways. There will be an opportunity to be involved in the management of a diverse surgical cohort, including ENT and Max‑Fax, UGI, colorectal, Hepatobiliary, liver, renal and sarcoma. This role will offer exciting opportunities for service development, working alongside a highly motivated and engaged MDT with opportunities for publications and attendance at national and international conferences. Applicants must have had prior involvement in audit and service evaluation. You’ll have the opportunity of working with the specialist surgery clinical specialist as well as peer working on the surgical wards. For further information please contact Claire Pearson, Clinical lead Physiotherapy In patients, 01213716779 Main duties of the job You will lead a team of Physiotherapists & Assistant staff alongside Clinical Specialist & other Team Lead Physiotherapists and will champion the ethos of gold standard care for Specialist surgical patients. You be expected to work autonomously, undertaking specialist, advanced assessments & treatment of a diverse surgical cohort, including Upper GI, Colorectal, Liver & Renal surgery, Hepatobiliary, ENT & Max‑Fax. The clinical caseload will largely be based on Surgical wards, with requirement to support the team across critical care at times of planned and unplanned leave. You’ll be expected to use advanced clinical reasoning and analytical skills to interpret clinical & non-clinical information to formulate diagnoses & treatment plans, set goals, and plan onward rehabilitation. You’ll be expected to participate in the development/education of registered, non-registered and undergraduate therapists, and contribute to departmental and speciality education programmes. There will be an expectation for active participation in service evaluation and quality improvement projects. You’ll be expected to be aware of current evidence in perioperative care and its application to clinical practice. Key skills include confidence in communication, strong leadership, collaborative working, and a personal desire to develop. You must have excellent time management skills, and experience of team management responsibilities such as appraisals/supervision, staff planning and induction. Person Specification Qualifications Appropriate Physiotherapy or professional qualification e.g. MCSP/ BSc or MSc. Registration with Health Care Professions Council CSP or equivalent professional registration Evidence of commitment to advanced clinical and non-clinical continued professional development within own speciality, e.g. post registration training, management / Leadership competencies and evidence of a detailed personal development portfolio Relevant, accredited, postgraduate education/courses in respiratory physiotherapy Attended student educator course Membership of relevant special interest groups. Experience Significant post registration experience as a senior physiotherapist in an NHS organisation. To include experience of working as a senior physiotherapist within specialist surgery. Experience of staff management including supervision and of development and performance management of staff. Significant experience in education and clinical training of others. Some experience of clinical/service evaluation Proficient knowledge and skill in the specialist assessment and treatment of a wide range of surgical cohorts including patients on perioperative pathways and patients presenting with respiratory pathologies Excellent knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Awareness of current evidence in specialist surgery and perioperative medicine and its application to clinical practice, using advanced clinical reasoning skills. Good understanding of IT systems and its application to clinical practice. Good knowledge and application of all areas of Clinical Governance including Quality, Audit and Risk management Understands the legal responsibilities of the profession Good understanding of principles of data and statistics and experience of their use in evaluation of service delivery Knowledge and understanding of the research process. Attendance at relevant external courses Additional Criteria Ability to work autonomously within specialist clinical area & undertake clinical analysis and reasoning skills in the assessment and treatment of surgical patients from diverse surgical cohort To be able to apply broad standards & guidelines to own practice. Well-developed specialist therapeutic handling and respiratory skills relevant to this specialty. Leadership and influential skills, able to lead and command confidence in senior therapists, consultants, senior nurses and managers within and related to respiratory services Able to demonstrate the ability to select and apply a wide range treatment options for a range of clinical presentations. Good verbal & written skills; able to communicate complex clinical information in a clear and logical manner to patients, colleagues and other healthcare professional concerning a wide range of clinical situations. Proven organisational skills including prioritisation and delegation On-call skills and able to provide advice and patient assessment as a lone physiotherapist in an on-call situation Ability to comprehend and work within the Trust's policies of data protection, equal opportunities and Health and Safety to meet the differing needs of patients. Ability to work weekends and on call as part of the physiotherapy emergency duty rota. Strong sense of professional integrity, and compliance with Trust vision and values. Ability to be self-motivated and to motivate team. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills Physically fit and resilient, able to meet the physical and emotional demands of the post. Able and willing to work flexibly in order to meet service priorities.
