Job Overview University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a senior nursing role in Medicine for Older People. The position is for a Senior Sister/Senior Charge Nurse within a multidisciplinary team that provides specialised high‑quality care for patients predominantly over the age of 80. Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities The successful applicant will deputise for the ward leader and effectively lead a team, ensuring the delivery of safe, patient‑centred care and supporting staff, patients and relatives. Key responsibilities include: Provide senior support to the G7 team and assist the Band 7 in running the service day‑to‑day. Deliver evidence‑based, compassionate care for elderly patients with a range of physical and cognitive impairments. Take charge of the ward on a regular basis. Work on service improvement projects to develop an evolving service. Manage a team through change, demonstrating excellent communication, clinical decision‑making, professional development and a commitment to staff development. Improve and provide safe, quality care for patients and their relatives. Collaborate closely with multiple teams such as therapy, adult community services and discharge teams. Administer medication, including IVs, cannulation and phlebotomy. Act as a practice assessor for students and a sign‑off assessor for multiple competencies. Inform the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse of any complaints or adverse events received, reporting actions taken in accordance with Trust policies. Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience Essential criteria: Qualified nurse (degree/diploma). Registered nurse on the appropriate part of the register. Significant post‑registration experience, including training within a relevant speciality. Ward management experience. Experience in an acute hospital setting. Evidence of supporting and managing a range of learners in practice. Evidence of supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice. Desirable criteria: Experience handling adverse events and complaints. Appraisal skills.
