Bona Vacantia Division (BVD) plays a vital role in handling assets that have no legal owner, ensuring they are managed effectively and benefit the general exchequer. The Latin term "bona vacantia" means "vacant goods", and is the name given to ownerless property, which by law passes to the Crown. collecting the beneficial assets of dissolved companies administering estates of individuals who pass away without a valid will or entitled heirs handling other miscellaneous ownerless assets Our income contributes to the HM Treasury's Consolidated Fund, supporting public finances. BVD is based in 1 Ruskin Square, Croydon and there are approximately 50 people in the Division who work across six work areas: the Central Casework Team handles financial assets from dissolved companies; Companies Work manages property, intellectual property, and other company assets; Estates Work administers estates and ensures rightful heirs receive their inheritance; the Policy and Complex Cases Group oversees complex cases, litigation, and divisional policy; the Legal Group provides expert legal advice; Digital and Analytics develops systems and delivers data‑driven insights; and Governance, Operations, and Finance supports the Division's strategy, operations functions. The Role This is an exciting opportunity to join the Policy and Complex Cases Team (PCC), which leads on the Division's most challenging companies and estates cases, including litigation, and works closely with our in‑house legal specialists. The team also oversees key external contracts such as conveyancing and mortgage‑related matters arising from dissolved companies, while ensuring our policies and processes remain compliant with the latest legislation. In addition, the team plays a central role in quality assurance for complaints and parliamentary correspondence. In this role, you will take ownership of complex casework, ensure compliance with legislation, and provide specialist input to internal reviews and legal research. You will contribute to shaping BV policies, lead on outsourcing initiatives, and strengthen relationships with stakeholders and third‑party partners. You'll also oversee conveyancing queries and guide colleagues on property‑related matters. On occasions there may be a requirement to deputise for the PCC Senior Lead at senior management meetings. You will also be expected to develop your own management and leadership skills and proactively support the Head of Division and SLT in achieving BV's strategy plan. Key Responsibilities Managing a caseload of company and estates cases with complex/legal issues. Review FOI responses for legislative compliance, advising colleagues as needed. Draft responses for complex internal reviews and MPs correspondence. Provide legal research and analysis to support the in‑house legal team. Contribute to drafting and refining BV policies. Drive outsourcing strategy: scope, pilot, train teams, and monitor quality. Build and maintain stakeholder and manage third‑party partnerships, ensuring value for money. Oversee conveyancing queries and support caseworkers with property matters. Supervise, mentor and line manage staff. Person Specification Behaviours: Working together (lead behaviour) Making effective decisions Communicating and influencing Essential legal experience: Experience of applying the law of bona vacantia, including relevant legislation such as the Administration of Estates Act 1925, Company Law, and Property Law. Demonstrable expertise in managing a complex case‑holding. All GLD employees must hold BPSS security clearance. If successful for this post you must hold, or be willing and able to obtain, BPSS level security clearance.
