You will also gain insight into the PDN, Senior Nurse, and Lead Nurse roles. We expect you to embrace the teaching aspect of the Band 6 role and lead others in their link nurse roles.

The Critical Care Unit has 13 beds plus a further 3 beds for when patient admission exceeds 13. We provide care for emergencies, trauma, general elective surgery, paediatrics, and medical patients. The unit is very well equipped with state-of-the-art technical equipment, with training programs provided by a dedicated Practice Development Nurse (PDN).

As a fully established Junior Sister in Critical Care, you will be expected to deliver patient care autonomously and as part of the team. Support all members of staff in their duties and professional development. Competently co-ordinate shifts ensuring that appropriate care is delivered, safety is maintained, and issues are escalated appropriately.

Supporting the running of the unit includes having a good understanding of the budget, being proactive in maintaining stock levels of medications and consumables, and undertaking audits. Leading by example and demonstrating the trust values is essential.

Main duties of this role include:

  • To work within the NMC code, within policies, procedures, and guidelines of The Queen Elizabeth Hospital King's Lynn NHS Foundation Trust.
  • To ensure that high standards of nursing care are given and maintained, and act when standards are not met.
  • Act as a clinical role model, ensuring clinical expertise and practice is enhanced.
  • To recognise changes in patients' conditions which require the intervention of others and refer on as appropriate.
  • Support the ward sister/charge nurse in ensuring the ward has appropriate Link nurses and support them in undertaking that role.
  • In the absence of the ward sisters/charge nurses, monitor the 24-hour duty rota to maintain agreed staffing levels.
About us

There's never been a more exciting time to join TeamQEH. We're working on a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build a new state-of-the-art hospital to open in 2030, and we are also carrying out one of the biggest pieces of digital transformation work we've ever undertaken. Our new electronic patient record (EPR) will replace paper-based patient records from 2026 and will lead to better, safer, joined-up care at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital and beyond.

At The QEH, we provide a comprehensive range of specialist, acute, obstetrics, and community-based services to around 331,000 people across west and north Norfolk, North Cambs, and South Lincs. We are an ambitious organisation that upholds our values of kindness, wellness, and fairness. We strive for continuous quality improvement, recently demonstrated in our 2024 CQC maternity inspection rating our services as 'Good', and we are proud to be a place to learn and grow through recognised learning and apprenticeships.

We recognise and reward our 4,000 staff and volunteers, priding ourselves on a community atmosphere and positive team spirit. We have approx. 530 beds across 33 wards and have newly built education and training facilities, a range of modern award-winning centres alongside a talented team of people ready to give you a warm welcome. We love working here and think you will too.
