Join the Barclays Legal team as the Director, Head of Business Banking Product (non-lending) and BUK Fraud & Scams – BUK Legal. In this dynamic position, you will lead a team of talented lawyers, ensuring seamless legal coverage for all non-lending products and propositions in Business Banking, while also overseeing legal matters related to Fraud & Scams across Barclays UK ("BUK"). As a key member of the Head of BUK Legal- Business Banking, CCO and Customer & Digital's direct legal leadership team, and a member of the BUK Legal General Counsel's extended leadership team, you will play a crucial role in shaping and executing the strategic agenda for the non-lending Business Banking Legal Team.

Purpose of the role

To ensure that the consumer banking activities are conducted in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and to help the bank manage legal and regulatory risks associated with these activities.

Accountabilities

  1. Development and implementation of best practice legal strategies for risk management and compliance.
  2. Proactive consumer banking Legal advice and support to the consumer banking division of the bank on a wide range of legal issues, including regulatory compliance, regulatory change management, consumer protection, and risk management.
  3. Representation of the bank in legal proceedings related to consumer banking, such as litigation, arbitration, and regulatory enquiry and investigations.
  4. Creation and periodic review of Legal documents in accordance with contractual arrangements policy to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  5. Legal research and analysis to stay up to date on changes in laws and regulations that may impact the bank's consumer banking operations.
  6. Developing and delivering training programmes to educate employees on legal and regulatory requirements related to consumer banking.
  7. Pro-active identification, communication, and provision of legal advice on applicable laws, rules and regulations (LRRs). Keeping up to date with regards to changes to LRRs in the relevant coverage area. Ensuring that LRRs are effectively allocated to, and adequately reflected within, the relevant policies, standards and controls.

Director Expectations

  1. To manage a business function, providing significant input to function wide strategic initiatives. Contribute to and influence policy and procedures for the function and plan, manage and consult on multiple complex and critical strategic projects, which may be business wide.
  2. They manage the direction of a large team or sub-function, leading other people managers and embedding a performance culture aligned to the values of the business. Or for an individual contributor, they lead organisation wide projects and act as deep technical expert and thought leader, identifying new ways of working and collaborating cross functionally. They will train, guide and coach less experienced specialists and provide information affecting long term profits, organisational risks and strategic decisions.
  3. Provide expert advice to senior functional management and committees to influence decisions made outside of own function, offering significant input to function wide strategic initiatives.
  4. Manage, coordinate and enable resourcing, budgeting and policy creation for a significant sub-function.
  5. Escalates breaches of policies / procedure appropriately.
  6. Foster and guide compliance, ensure regulations are observed that relevant processes in place to facilitate adherence.
  7. Focus on the external environment, regulators, or advocacy groups to both monitor and influence on behalf of Barclays, when appropriate.
  8. Demonstrate extensive knowledge of how the function integrates with the business division / Group to achieve the overall business objectives.
  9. Maintain broad and comprehensive knowledge of industry theories and practices within own discipline alongside up-to-date relevant sector / functional knowledge, and insight into external market developments / initiatives.
  10. Use interpretative thinking and advanced analytical skills to solve problems and design solutions in often complex/ sensitive situations.
  11. Exercise management authority to make significant decisions and certain strategic decisions or recommendations within own area.
  12. Negotiate with and influence stakeholders at a senior level both internally and externally.
  13. Act as principal contact point for key clients and counterparts in other functions/ businesses divisions.
  14. Mandated as a spokesperson for the function and business division.
