Teaching Assistant (TA) – Behavioural Support Job Purpose: To support pupils with behavioural, social, and emotional needs, helping them engage positively in learning and school life. The role involves working with individual pupils, small groups, and supporting the class teacher to create a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment.Key Responsibilities Pupil Support Provide 1:1 and small-group support for pupils exhibiting challenging behaviour. Help pupils regulate emotions, develop coping strategies, and follow behaviour plans. Build positive, trusting relationships to encourage participation and progress. Use de-escalation strategies and restorative approaches when needed. Support pupils during transitions, unstructured times, or moments of crisis. Classroom Support Work closely with the class teacher to adapt learning for pupils with behavioural needs. Reinforce clear expectations, routines, and boundaries. Assist with behaviour management strategies in line with school policy. Prepare and adapt resources to maintain pupil engagement. Monitoring & Reporting Observe and record behaviour patterns to inform planning and interventions. Report concerns promptly to the teacher and pastoral team. Contribute to behaviour reviews, SEN plans, and meetings with parents or professionals. Safeguarding & Welfare Follow safeguarding procedures at all times. Promote pupils’ well-being, safety, and inclusion. Assist with personal care or supervision when appropriate. Skills & Experience Experience working with children displaying behavioural, social, or emotional needs. Strong behaviour-management and de-escalation skills. Patience, resilience, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Ability to build positive relationships and act as a consistent role model. Good communication and teamwork skills. Knowledge of strategies such as Emotion Coaching, Restorative Practice, or Trauma-Informed approaches (desirable). Understanding of EHCPs, SEND, and safeguarding. Personal Qualities Calm, empathetic, and approachable. Solution-focused with a positive attitude. Firm but fair; consistent in expectations. Committed to helping pupils overcome barriers and succeed.
