CONTEXT Nexsys Analytics is a spin-out company of the University of Manchester, providing consultancy and cloud software solutions to clients in the UK and internationally. We develop and apply innovative methods and tools to assess and optimise investments and policies in water resource and multi-resource systems. This role includes project management, corporate administration, and business development duties. As part of this fast-growing company (currently 6 colleagues), you will have the opportunity to contribute to projects locally and globally and develop working relationships with diverse actors in industry, government, and NGOs across the water and environmental resources sector. This position is suited for a versatile, efficient, effective and driven professional with proven management, writing and communication skills looking to help grow an innovative new environmental tech company.
PURPOSE OF THE JOB The post's primary function is project delivery and project management in the area of water resources assessment, planning and management.
We are looking for someone who has existing experience delivering and managing technical projects. We are looking for someone who is keen to progressively grow into an expanded role including corporate management and business development.
In the project delivery and management role, you will contribute to and manage a portfolio of projects. You will work with team members to deliver the project and meet client needs as required. This includes planning and contributing to project analysis and reporting. Delivering projects means you will be liaising with clients, coordinating activities and co-producing deliverables, tracking milestones, organising and eventually chairing meetings, and organising workshops and/or training courses in the UK or abroad. There may be opportunities or requirements to travel; typically in short trips of a few days but up to a week (may involve weekend travel).
The other two roles below are initially secondary, but we are looking for someone who over time will be keen to increase the fraction of their time involved in these activities:
Corporate management: coordinate a diverse and evolving set of activities including tracking and reporting on company resources, financial and personnel management, contributing to and leading bids, building & maintaining client relationships in addition to other aspects of business administration. You will gradually be expected to represent the company in meetings and to present the company's work and products to partners and/or clients.
Business development: identify UK and international opportunities, discuss them with other team members, identify their personnel requirements, lead or contribute to proposals/bids (including submission), and plan eventual new hires or subcontracts. In this role you will contribute to growing the business.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The range of duties set out below is indicative but not prescriptive or comprehensive as the duties may evolve with Nexsys' activities and outputs. You will be expected to show flexibility and adaptability in meeting the developing needs of a dynamic and innovative spin-out company. You will work with the senior management team in a diverse and evolving series of areas.
Initially these will be focused on:
Contributing as a team member to projects bids, deliverables (presentations, reports, and training courses) as a senior water assessment and planning engineerCoordinating the production of projects bids and deliverablesProject management, including tracking resources, costs, deliverables and organising internal and client meetings.Over time you will take increasingly take on corporate management and business development duties, for example:
Planning, management, analysis of company resources/finances and project spend,Maintaining the company project portfolio by tracking, reporting on, and quality controlling their milestones and deliverables,Maintaining relationships with current and future clients to create new opportunities,Funding & consultancy opportunity identification, and bid writing and submission,Contracting, invoicing and business growth planning, andSupporting other colleagues when required (e.g. during peak workflow, sickness, etc.).ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Experience of successful project delivery and/or management in UK-based water & environment consultancy.Experience in management, delivery, and internal analysis of projects.Communication, advocacy and influencing skillsOrganisational, planning and time management skillsIT skills including MS Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Project.Capacity to take initiative and demonstrated ability to be a self-starterAbility to produce high quality reports and associated documentationExcellent interpersonal and leadership skills, able to coordinate multi-disciplinary teamsGeneral knowledge of research and consultancy project finance and experience of budget setting and management for various national and international clients.Technical experience in water resources & environment consultancy industry, ideally including in the England & Wales Water Resources Management Plan processDESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE MSc or PhD in water, energy or agricultural engineering or science.Experience with water resources modelling or projects involving modellingBENEFITS Possibility of stock options for good performance and length of service
