Job summary Leadership and management of the radiotherapy Physics ServiceProvision of expert scientific advice to staff within Radiotherapy, Radiation Services and elsewhere in the TrustLeadership of and participation in relevant R&D activity in the field Main duties of the job The main purposes and responsibilities of the post are leadership and management of the Radiotherapy Physics Service, including overall responsibility for the maintenance and development of the Quality Management System to ensure continuing national accreditation; overseeing the planning, development, delivery and monitoring of Radiation Physics training programmes for Velindre and Wales for Medical Physics and Clinical Oncology, scheduling the physics resources to meet ever changing demands (including manpower and accommodation) and leadership of and participation in relevant R&D activity in the field.
Clinical proficiency and experience is expected to be maintained through leadership of and participation in Departmental service activities as required, problem solving & advising on difficult patient and equipment related dosimetric issues, research, development and implementation of new techniques, and advising professionally at all levels up to UK national and international boards.
The tasks carried out are for staff, groups of patients, and individual patients.
The cure of patients depends critically on the standard of work, and without it patients cannot be treated.
Mistakes as small as a few percent can produce irreparable damage to normal tissues, recurrence of the tumour, and/or death.

You will be able to find a full Job description and Person Specification attached within the supporting documents or please click Apply now to view in Trac Person Specification Qualifications and Knowledge Essential Education to at least Masters Level in Medical Physics UK HCPC Clinical Registration as a Clinical Scientist Registration as Medical Physics Expert Registration as a Consultant Clinical Scientist or equivalent level of knowledge and experience Principles of Radiotherapy Physics to an advanced level Thorough understanding of the relevant Codes of Practice for dosimetry Understanding of the physics used in each Treatment Planning System Limitations & pitfalls of radiation dosimetry, calculation, and computation, including electrons Radiation Protection Quality Assurance schemes/principles in RT.
Health & Safety principles and practice.
A good overview of the place of physics and RT in cancer therapy.
Basic Anatomy & Physiology Desirable PhD in Medical Physics or related subject FIPEM or equivalent Advanced Mathematics Principles and practice of data analysis, aggregation of uncertainties, and statistics.
Principles of physics research methods Radiobiological basis of RT and its use for dose changes Cancer induction by radiation - principles and facts Published papers in the field Experience Essential Medical Physics Expert with commensurate experience in Radiotherapy Physics and associated subjects Extensive Section Management and/or Service Leadership experience Significant Research and Development experience and track record in the field An understanding of the use of IT in Radiotherapy including knowledge of the infrastructure used in a modern Radiotherapy department and the use of AI in radiotherapy Desirable Familiarity with a range of radiotherapy treatment machines and techniques, treatment planning systems and other associated Radiotherapy Physics equipment and systems.
Familiarity with Radiotherapy Physics procedures and protocols Skills and Attributes Essential Good HR, inter-personal and negotiating skills Good at option appraisals of complex alternatives.
Good communicator of difficult scientific issues to scientists and non-scientists with good verbal, written and audio-visual production & presentation skills.
Able to give reasoned and accurate guidance in a timely fashion in stressful situations.
Advanced mathematical skills Good 3D visualisation and precise manipulation for dosimetry Proven ability to develop the physics of RT Proven ability with computer software, and its modification, able to create complex scientific spreadsheets.
Good planning and organisation for new complex data gathering requirements Able to provide highly specialist advice and services Good teaching, tutoring and training abilities.
Facility with preparing and keeping project documentation and records Able to concentrate intensely for long periods to solve clinical and physics problems.
Other Desirable Welsh Speaker (Level 1) or willingness to work towards Ability to travel within geographical area covered by service Able to work hours flexibly.
