The role of the post-holder is to provide leadership for a range of ionising radiation clinical, scientific and advisory services that involve the application of ionising radiation within Cardiff and Vale UHB and South-East Wales. The post-holder will be appointed as a Principal or Consultant Clinical Scientist, depending on HSSR status.

Main Duties of the Job

The post-holder is expected to provide specialist advice at Medical Physics Expert (MPE) level to multidisciplinary teams (including Radiographers, Consultant Clinicians, Consultant Radiologists, nurses and other service users). Additional MPE duties include the set-up and implementation work required for participation in local and national multi-centre clinical trials. The post is located within the Ionising Radiation Physics section but has strong collaborative links with the UHB Radiology service, the Cardiff University Positron Emission Tomography Imaging Centre (PETIC) and Velindre University NHS Trust.

Job Responsibilities

The post-holder is required to participate in the routine clinical service (both diagnostic imaging, non-imaging and radionuclide therapies) as well as clinical trials the regional service. The post holder is expected to initiate research and development, introduce new imaging and therapeutic techniques, and take a leading role in the teaching and training of staff and students.

The role involves using highly complex imaging and measurement equipment, developing and applying information technology, dealing with hazards such as radiation and biological samples. Interpreting and complying with extensive legislation is an essential part of the post-holder's duties.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Good honours first degree in physical science or equivalent.
  • Relevant master's degree or equivalent.
  • Relevant PhD or equivalent experience.
  • Registration as a Clinical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Corporate membership of a professional organisation.
  • Medical Physics Expert in Nuclear Medicine on the RPA2000 list.
Desirable
  • NVQ Level 4 management qualification or above.
  • Fellowship of a professional organisation.
  • Certificate of Competence to act as a Radiation Protection Adviser.
  • Certificate of Competence to act as a Radioactive Waste Adviser.
Experience Essential
  • Working as a Medical Physics Expert (MPE) in nuclear medicine and/or ionising radiation safety.
  • Acquiring and analysing complex image and other data.
  • Operation, quality assurance and calibration of complex ionising radiation equipment.
  • Radiation metrology to national standards.
  • Safe use and providing advice on the safe use of ionising radiation.
  • Safety audit and risk management.
  • Initiating and participating in research and development projects.
  • Teaching and training and development of teaching and training material.
  • Scientific presentation and publication.

  • Managing high activity sealed sources (HASS).
