Cardiff and Vale University Health Board
The role of the post-holder is to provide leadership for a range of ionising radiation clinical, scientific and advisory services that involve the application of ionising radiation within Cardiff and Vale UHB and South-East Wales. Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
The post-holder will be a member of staff of the Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering (MPCE) in the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board (C&V UHB); CEDAR (Centre for Healthcare Evaluation, Device Assessment and Research), Clinical Engineering, Ionising Radiation Physics, and Non-ionising Radiation Physics. The post holder will also provide Nuclear Medicine expertise in the wider sub-regional area. The role will cover clinical, scientific and advisory services for Oncology and other applications.
The post-holder is expected to provide specialist advice at Medical Physics Expert (MPE) level to multidisciplinary teams (including Radiographers, Consultant Clinicians, Consultant Radiologists, nurses and other service users). Additional MPE duties include the set-up and implementation work required for participation in local and national multi-centre clinical trials. The post is located within the Ionising Radiation Physics section but has strong collaborative links with the UHB Radiology service, the Cardiff University Positron Emission Tomography Imaging Centre (PETIC) and Velindre University NHS Trust.

The post holder is expected to initiate research and development, introduce new imaging and therapeutic techniques, and take a leading role in the teaching and training of staff and students.
Relevant master's degree or equivalent. Relevant PhD or equivalent experience. Medical Physics Expert in Nuclear Medicine on the RPA2000 list.
NVQ Level 4 management qualification or above. Certificate of Competence to act as a Radioactive Waste Adviser.
Working as a Medical Physics Expert (MPE) in nuclear medicine and/or ionising radiation safety. Acquiring and analysing complex image and other data. Operation, quality assurance and calibration of complex ionising radiation equipment. Safety audit and risk management. Initiating and participating in research and development projects. Teaching and training and development of teaching and training material. Scientific presentation and publication.
Team management and performance review. Project management and service development.
Ability to exercise judgement on complex facts and situations requiring analysis, interpretation and option appraisal. Use and customisation of information technology including database applications. Scientific computer programming. Using complex clinical and measurement equipment, including both hardware and software systems. Strategic planning. Willing to work flexible hours to allow the service to be covered. Broad scientific knowledge. Advanced knowledge of the application of physics to medicine. Advanced knowledge of image and other data processing and analysis. Detailed knowledge of the principles of quality assurance. Detailed knowledge of practices, clinical procedures, equipment operation and quality assurance in nuclear medicine. Data protection legislation and guidance. Understanding of risks and hazards to patients, staff and the public from radiation, equipment and human error.
