Job summary This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, motivated and experienced Practitioner Psychologist to lead on the development of psychologically-informed care within an All Wales Paediatric Persistent Pain Service.
The successful candidate will provide psychological expertise and consultation to support the establishment and development of a new, evidence and value-based model of care to meet the needs of Children and Young People with Persistent Pain, and their families, across Wales.
The successful applicant will help lead on a phased development plan for an interdisciplinary model of care with the lead Allied Health Professional and Consultant Paediatric Pain specialist working closely with other team members and local multidisciplinary teams for each Health Board.
The tertiary service will initially operate clinically across a variety of locations including community, hospital sites and virtually and will involve support of schools, teaching and training, co-design of pathways, tools and workshops and active support of communities of practice.
The clinical model is based on a service specification from national workshops in Wales [a draft copy available on request], integrated care models recommended nationally.
It also aligns with the Cardiff and Vale Rehabilitation Model and key local services from other partner University Health Boards.
This post will also be instrumental in co-production and collaboration with partner stakeholders Main duties of the job The appointee will provide psychologically informed expertise and clinical leadership to the multidisciplinary team developing and delivering a persistent pain service that supports children and young people from diverse backgrounds across Wales.
The post will provide psychological leadership to an interdisciplinary team developing and supporting a cultutrally competent and integrated approach to persistent pain management enabling care as close to home as possible working with local services, communities and schools across Wales.
This will include individual patient work, group work, consultation to others and support and supervision of colleagues.
Partnership working is essential for this role through co-production, fostering multidisciplinary and multi-agency relationships and drawing upon community of practice.
The role will involve developing psychologically informed training and education; and supporting colleagues beyond the persistent pain service in developing a common understanding of pain management and therapeutic options.
The role will actively support practice-based education.
There is a significant service development aspect to this role with opportunities for research and audit with teams working alongside the clinical service.

Person Specification Qualifications Essential Good Honours degree in Psychology with eligibility for Graduate Basis for Chartership (GBC) with the BPS.
Post-graduate Doctorate in Clinical/Counselling Psychology accredited by the HCPC (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996 as accredited by the BPS).
HCPC registration as a practitioner psychologist.
Desirable Post-doctoral training in one or more additional specialist areas of psychological practice.
Experience Essential Substantial and demonstrable post-qualification experience of working as a HCPC Registered Practitioner Psychologist within clinical health psychology/medical settings or applicable transferable skills Significant experience of working with a wide variety of patient groups presenting with the full range of clinical severity across the full range of care settings including paediatric, outpatient, community, primary care, and in-patient settings and maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems.
Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for clients' psychological care and treatment, both as a professionally qualified healthcare professional and also within the context of a multi-disciplinary care plan.
Evidence of service development and innovation Experience of teaching, training and professional and clinical supervision Desirable Experience of working with service users as co-producers Skills Essential High level knowledge of theory and practice of at least two specialist psychological therapies Knowledge of legislation in relation to specialty Communication & Relationship skills as described on person specification Planning and Organisational Skills as described on person specification Ability to identify and provide highly specialised, psychologically informed support to carers and staff.
Doctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology.
Desirable Providing service feedback and audit data to stakeholders Evidence of significant post-qualification continuing professional development as recommended by the HCPC and BPS.
Awareness and application of equality, diversity and inclusion in practice Knowledge Essential Evidence of significant post-qualification continuing professional development as recommended by the HCPC and BPS.
Well-developed specialist knowledge of clinical/counselling psychology theory and practice, assessment, and the application of specialised psychological therapies related to the needs of paediatric patients Formal Training and supervision of other psychologists.
Desirable Awareness of equality, diversity and inclusion Personal Qualities Essential Commitment to and interest in working with children and young people, and their families, with persistent pain Willingness to participate in continuing professional development & psychologists working in similar team settings Requirement to undertake frequent exposure to emotionally distressing and traumatic situations.
