Job Description

The Nautilus International Communications, Campaigns and Digital department is responsible for representing the internal and external messaging of the world's largest trade union for maritime professionals.


Purpose:

To raise the external profile of the Union and the work of members to government, the media and public, exploiting the benefits of digital communications and social media to achieve our campaign objectives.


Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead on member facing campaigns, using a variety of methods (petitions, surveys, etc.) to engage members
  • Liaise with the Industrial and Organising teams to identify opportunities to deliver impactful industrial campaigns
  • Liaise with Public Affairs team to identify opportunities to deliver impactful interventions in Parliament and key stakeholders across the devolved nations
  • Collaborate with Communications team to deliver impactful campaigns messaging and content via social media and online presence
  • Build and develop effective relationships with parliament and the devolved administrations, as well as links with trade union federations and industry bodies
  • Produce online graphics and video content
  • Monitor media coverage and liaise with local and national press when required
  • Produce press releases, liaise with the media, meeting deadlines as appropriate
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of a campaigns strategy to support the Union’s work
  • Contribute to the development of the Union’s Strategic Plan, Departmental and Strategic Campaign Plans
  • Assist with drafting General Meeting, UK Branch Conference and TUC Congress motions
  • Provide expertise to other departments as directed by Director of Communications, Campaigns and Digital
  • Represent Nautilus at external organisations as directed by the Director of Communications, Campaigns and Digital
  • There may be a requirement for the role holder to work outside of the normal working hours and travel for work, including regular travel to branch offices

Campaigning and advocacy:

  • Experience in developing and executing strategic campaigns that align with organisational goals
  • Ability to create, manage, and evaluate campaigns to raise the Union’s profile and influence public policy
  • Ability to work on multiple campaigns simultaneously while meeting deadlines and maintaining high standards
  • Ability to develop persuasive arguments and present them effectively to policymakers and stakeholders
  • Ability to adapt to changing campaign needs and find creative solutions to challenges.

Communications:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience in crafting press releases, opinion pieces, and campaign materials
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex issues to diverse audiences, including government, media, and the public
  • Demonstrated experience in leveraging digital communications and social media platforms to amplify campaign messages and engage with target audiences
  • Proficiency in using social media analytics tools to measure the impact of campaigns and adjust strategies accordingly.

Media Relations:

  • Experience in building and maintaining relationships with journalists and media outlets
  • Ability to secure media coverage for campaigns and respond effectively to media inquiries.


Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Ability to engage with a variety of stakeholders, including union members, government officials, NGOs, and industry bodies
  • Experience in coalition-building and working with allied organisations to achieve common campaign objectives.
