In this role, you will leverage your expertise in geoscience and data science to extract, transform, load, analyse and visualize a vibrant range of geoscience datasets with immediate relevance and impact in our large commercial projects in the mineral exploration and oil and gas sectors. You will work closely with our Research and Development and Software teams. We seek a candidate with approximately 1 to 3 years of experience in geoscience combined with mathematics, data science, computer science, and/or machine learning.

About Geotek

Geotek, established in 1994, is a global leader in non-destructive instrumentation and analysis of geological core and cuttings samples, with a strong international presence. We employ a wide range of analytical techniques including p- and s-wave velocity, natural gamma ray, hyperspectral imaging, computed tomography (CT), X-Ray fluorescence (XRF) and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). We maintain, develop and deploy a code base including several machine learning models, which we leverage in our consultancy services.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Implementing and adapting existing data analysis techniques.
  • Collaborating with our senior geoscientists, research and development and software teams to develop and implement new data analytical techniques and workflows.
  • Implementing quality control measures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of data and participating in validation processes to verify the quality of acquired data.
  • Remit of duties and responsibilities will be adapted based upon the experience and interests of the successful candidate.
  • The role will be based in the UK, with some opportunity to travel in the UK and overseas.

Qualifications and Experience Requirements

  • Practical experience of programming languages commonly used in data analysis, such as Python, R, or MATLAB
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Good interpersonal, presentation and organisational skills
  • Effective communication skills, and ability to work as part of a small team.
  • Undergraduate degree in geoscience, computer science, data science, mathematics or a related field
  • Knowledge of key mathematical, statistical and machine learning data analysis techniques in the Earth sciences
  • Experience of working with databases and big data
  • Ability to communicate complex geoscientific information effectively
  • Fluent in written and spoken English
  • Full and clean UK driving license
  • Previous experience of working with core scan data is potentially advantageous but it is not mandatory

This is an on-site role with the option to be based at either our offices in Daventry, England or our office in Llandudno Junction, Wales.
