Role Summary:


Join the CBI’s Economic Consulting team, a dynamic and growing part of CBI Economics – the CBI’s innovative business incubator. At CBI Economics, we generate robust economic evidence for businesses, policymakers and thought leaders. Our team excels in evaluating economic impacts, demonstrating the benefits of policy changes, assessing the impacts of business activities and exploring future scenarios. We specialise in economic, social and environmental impacts, decarbonisation, clean air, innovation, and regional growth driven by expert consultants and survey specialists.


As a Principal Economist, you will be instrumental in helping CBI Economics become the leading economic consultancy for business leaders, helping organisations make important decisions and achieve impact with their key stakeholders, including government. You will lead economic analyses, manage individual projects and support business development. You will also work closely with the Economic Surveys and Data team, who deliver economic, policy and commercial surveys, and our Economic Intelligence team, who provide expert macroeconomic insight that helps to inform business decisions.


The role involves a high degree of interaction with CBI Economics clients to understand their requirements and design, manage and deliver projects that meet those requirements.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Lead on the delivery of economic projects under the CBI Economics business, including leading economic analysis and business surveys.
  • Support the development of new economic products, including economic models, reports, and briefings.
  • Manage the delivery of individual projects to budget and on time, working with other members of the team, and engaging with clients on a regular basis.
  • Coordinate the drafting of compelling proposals for prospective clients and public sector bids, working with other members of the team to develop the methodological approach, set out timelines and costs, demonstrate knowledge and experience.
  • Support on the operational aspects of the CBI Economics business, including helping the CBI Economics Manager with planning resources for project delivery, supporting more junior members of the team, driving commercial opportunities and promoting our analysis.
  • Present to a variety of audiences as part of project launches, delivery of project outputs to clients and promotion of CBI Economics analysis


Knowledge & Experience:


  • Degree in Economics or related subject or equivalent experience
  • Experience working in a consultancy context or other commercial context, delivering bespoke economic analysis to support clients
  • Ability to scope and manage economic projects and deliver through others, including setting the direction of work for a project and managing progress across multiple projects.
  • Strong understanding of the current economic policy landscape and government decision-making.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to negotiate and reach mutual agreement with others.
  • Strong presentation skills including an ability to present complex economic concepts to a non-technical audience.
  • Strong quantitative skills with experience using Excel for data analysis and economic modelling.
  • Ability to work autonomously and manage project workstreams.
