**Job description**:
The Rail Analysis division comprises of six diverse teams of more than 70 analysts from a wide variety of backgrounds. Our team of analysts is made up of economists, statisticians, social researchers and transport modellers. This role sits within one of two economist branches within the division - Rail Enhancement Analysis (REA).

As an Assistant Economist you’ll support an Economic Advisor and work with the wider analyst team and policy professionals to influence investment decisions and shape long-term policy decisions. This will include a range of work done in-house, as well as working closely with external stakeholders or technical advisors.

This post also offers a unique opportunity to work with the Rail Infrastructure Group (RIG) providing expert analytical advice to a range of audiences for major infrastructure projects and programmes worth hundreds of millions of pounds. It is an exciting chance for a motivated individual to influence a high-profile policy area and further develop a broad set of skills.

**Roles and Responsibilities**

**_ Your key duties and responsibilities will include:_**
- Supporting and leading on value-for-money advice, providing cost-benefit analysis to influence key rail, departmental and wider government priorities.
- Working with external stakeholders and technical advisors to ensure analysis is fit-for-purpose and aligns with departmental guidance and best-practice principles.
- Summarising and interpreting information and evidence accurately, making use of different data sources and conducting analysis using Excel, R or other programmes.
- Effectively communicating and presenting results of analysis to senior analysts and non-technical audiences, to ensure robust evidence is at the heart of decision-making.
- Supporting wider strategic analysis conducted within the team, responding to live issues affecting rail infrastructure investment and the wider rail industry.

**About you**

We are looking for someone with an aptitude for sourcing data, understanding its strengths and limitations. You will have a high attention to detail and enjoy using analysis to provide solutions to real world transport problems.

You will have excellent interpersonal skills, and can build positive working relationships with internal and external key stakeholders.

You will be a confident communicator with the ability to simply articulate key analytical messages to diverse audiences.

You are a self-motivated and ambitious individual who is comfortable working independently and keen to develop and build knowledge.

**Further information**:
You will have the option to be based in our London office attracting the London salary, or in Leeds or Birmingham attracting the National salary. If based in Leeds or Birmingham, occasional travel to our London office will be required for key meetings and team events.

A minimum of 40% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.

**Qualifications**:

- Applicants must hold a minimum 2.1 numerate degree. At least 50% of the studied modules must have mathematical content (e.g. Economics, Econometrics, Astrophysics, Data Science, Decision Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Operational Research, Physics and Statistics). Or a master’s qualification in Economics, or equivalent that has a proven minimum of 50% of Economic credits.**Behaviours**:
