About our client:

Our client has over 30 years of expertise in developing and installing a wide range of safety products. In recent years, they have embraced advanced electronic and electrical control systems, ensuring their products meet the highest standards of safety and reliability, positioning them as a trusted supplier in the industry.

About the Role:

We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the design, development, and implementation of mechanical systems and components for both new and ongoing product development projects. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the entire mechanical design process for complex electro-mechanical products, contributing to innovative solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

Design & Development:

  • Oversee the complete mechanical design process, from concept creation to detailed 3D designs, 2D engineering drawings, version control, and prototype development.
  • Develop and manage prototypes, pre-production testing, project plans, and test rigs to facilitate smooth product launches and transitions to other teams.
  • Generate mechanical concepts and design complex moving assemblies with accurate modeling to reduce prototyping costs.
  • Perform mechanical calculations and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to support design validation, testing, and informed decision-making.
  • Participate in prototype assembly, testing, and evaluation, identifying failure modes and driving continuous product improvements.

Engineering Drawings & Documentation:

  • Produce and maintain 2D manufacturing and assembly drawings for a range of complex products, covering multiple variants and individual components.
  • Manage and update Bills of Materials (BOMs) and associated metadata, coordinating with relevant departments when necessary.
  • Ensure effective version control of released drawings and mechanical CAD files.
  • Apply and verify engineering drawings using Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T), working closely with suppliers to understand process-specific tolerances.

General Duties:

  • Contribute to defining project requirements and assist in developing engineering specifications.
  • Prepare and maintain mechanical sections of technical construction files, providing necessary documentation such as DFMEA, product guides, and technical support.
  • Ensure compliance with product standards and specifications.
  • Manage material selection, engaging with suppliers to discuss materials, manufacturing processes, Design for Manufacturing (DFM), and Design for Assembly (DFA).
  • Coordinate and oversee mechanical testing programs within Research & Development (R&D).
  • Operate in compliance with the company’s Quality Management System and adhere to health and safety regulations.

Please note – Applications are only open to applicants who are eligible to live and work in the UK and do not require additional visa/sponsorship requirements in the future.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Strong 3D CAD Skills (Solidworks, Creo or Inventor)
  • Strong proficiency in creating and maintaining engineering drawings, with a solid understanding of GD&T principles.
  • Experience collaborating with suppliers, particularly in managing manufacturing tolerances.
  • Expertise in material selection for manufacturing and experience working directly with suppliers on DFM/DFA processes.
  • Proven experience in designing electro-mechanical systems, motor selection, and gearbox design, with knowledge of processes such as aluminum extrusion, die casting, injection molding, and rapid prototyping. (Preferred)
  • Familiarity with product compliance standards and experience in preparing technical construction files.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, effective across all levels of the company, as well as with customers and suppliers.
