Consultant Psychiatrist - Islington Crisis Team

The post offered is that of a full-time substantive Consultant Psychiatrist in General Adult Psychiatry covering Islington Crisis Resolution & Home Treatment Team (ICRHTT) 5PA, and the Mental Health Crisis Assessment Service (MHCAS) 5PA. Both services are co-located at The Highgate Mental Health Centre, Dartmouth Park Hill, London, N19 4NX. Integral to the ICRHTT sessions is liaison to Drayton Park Women's Crisis House, 32 Drayton Park, London, N5 1PB and Crisis Single Point of Access (C-SPA).

This is a replacement post and full-time substantive position for 10 Programmed Activities and has arisen due to the promotion & overseas secondment of previous post holders. The position may suit one full time or two part time consultants.

The role of the consultant is to be the clinical lead of the teams and to ensure high-quality, patient-centred, effective, safe, and efficient care is delivered by the team.

Main duties of the job

Job responsibilities

The post holder will provide overall clinical leadership for the CRHTT as well as direct clinical assessments and consultations for the team, including the following:

  • Daily Medical input, consultation and clinical leadership to the team and overall clinical responsibility for patients referred to the team.
  • Medical input and leadership in care planning and risk assessment for patients under the team.
  • Regular clinical supervision as required of the two full-time Specialty Grade Psychiatrists and to Specialist and Core Psychiatry trainees contributing sessions to the team.
  • Carrying out Mental Health Act assessments when required.
  • Regular clinical liaison with the relevant community, inpatient, liaison and perinatal teams and their Consultants.
  • Close clinical liaison with the inpatient service, helping facilitate early discharge of patients back into the community where appropriate.
  • Weekly attendance at the bed management meeting.
  • Clinical leadership in facilitating physical health care checks for all patients under the team.
  • Regular direct assessments of patients referred to the team with a focus on complex cases and high risk.
  • Regular lead reviews of patients admitted to the Drayton Park Womens Crisis house and Highbury Grove Crisis Resource Centre.
  • Minimum twice-weekly multi-disciplinary chart reviews of all patients under the team.
  • Medical report writing as and when required.
  • Close liaison as required with GPs referring to the team.
  • Assist with Serious Incident investigations and complaints when required.
  • Provide second opinions for Consultant colleagues if requested.
  • Support Clinical Governance projects, particularly audits projects in the Division plan.
  • Provide annual and study leave cover for colleagues.
  • Ensure that a structured programme of learning is in place for medical students when attached to the team.
  • Attend and participate in Consultants' and Management meetings to keep informed of service issues and developments.
Person Specification Education/Qualifications/Registration
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a license to practice. Must be on the specialist register or within 6 months of gaining a Certificate of Completion of Training.
  • Membership of Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent higher qualification in psychiatry.
  • Section 12(2) and Approved Clinician status (or eligibility).
  • Registered with Royal College of Psychiatrists CPD programme and in good standing.
  • Trained as an Educational Supervisor for doctors in training.
  • Training as a Consultant mentor.
Knowledge & Experience
  • Knowledge and observance of the requirements and duties of a doctor laid down by the GMC in Good Medical Practice.
  • Clinical knowledge & experience of the full range of mental disorders including those with severe enduring mental illnesses & personality disorders.
  • Experience in the assessment and management of complex clinical cases including experience of crisis / emergency high risk presentations.
  • Expertise in risk assessment, formulation, and management.
  • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act and safeguarding practices.
  • Experience of community psychiatry and interest and experience of working with individuals with severe personality difficulties/disorders.
  • Experience in workplace-based assessments of doctors in training.
  • Knowledge of clinical commissioning and external organisations that interface with an NHS Trust.
  • Experience in organising and chairing meetings.
  • Good understanding of Trust governance structures, especially clinical governance.
  • An understanding of the role of research within the wider service.
  • Willingness to participate in research as appropriate and within the context of the duties of the post.
  • Experience in teaching small and large groups.
  • Experience in developing policies and protocols.
  • Experience of service development.
Skills & Abilities

  • Good knowledge of and ability to use both spoken and written English.

  • Sensitivity and awareness in clients and staff from different cultures, ethnicities, gender and sexual orientations.
  • Teaching and supervision skills for undergraduate medical students, doctors in training and multi-professional staff.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and to develop effective working relationships on an individual and multidisciplinary basis with all levels of staff.
  • Ability to take on the role and responsibilities of the clinical lead.
  • Experience in undertaking clinical audit, investigating serious incidents and handling complaints.
  • A special interest or willingness to develop one in an area which helps to meet the needs of the Trust.
  • Experience in successfully delivering research projects.
