Unlocking the Power of Weather Forecasting

We're seeking a highly skilled Scientific Software Engineer to join our Radar R&D team at the Met Office. As a world-leading authority in weather and climate services, we're dedicated to delivering accurate forecasts to our customers.

Your technical expertise will be crucial in developing cutting-edge systems that collect and process data from our network of weather radars. You'll work closely with our upgraded Dual Polarisation radars to enhance the data collected through our observing network.

With your scientific understanding and technical skills, you'll help us develop innovative solutions that deliver reliable and timely weather information to our customers, including the Flood Forecasting Centre, regional water companies, and the Environment Agency.

You'll have the opportunity to design and develop operational data services exploiting cloud computing technologies to efficiently produce radar products. Your experience in designing, writing, and understanding Python code in a cloud-based, Linux environment will be invaluable.

We offer a competitive salary of up to £46,974 annually, which includes an outstanding Civil Service pension, Recruitment Retention Allowance, and annual leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) after 5 years.

To succeed in this role, you'll need experience in a mathematical, physical, or computational science or related discipline, equivalent to several years working post-graduate. You should also provide proactive scientific and technical insight into the solving of scientific software engineering tasks or problems.
