About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Clinical Scientist to join our team at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. As a Clinical Scientist in Radiotherapy Physics, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and effective delivery of radiotherapy treatments to our patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Scientific and Clinical Expertise
    • Provide expert medical physics support to the provision of radiotherapy within the Trust.
    • Act as a Medical Physics Expert, providing advice on technology and treatment to clinical oncologists and other stakeholders.
    • Manage quality assurance work for relevant systems.
    • Monitor training needs and competencies of Medical Physics department staff.
    • Assist in planning new radiotherapy facilities and technology.
    • Perform acceptance testing on new radiotherapy technology systems and imaging facilities.
    • Manage commissioning of new radiotherapy technology.
    • Manage relevant Quality Assurance data, imaging, and other databases.
    • Calibrate Radiotherapy treatment machines.
    • Develop links between all sections of Radiotherapy Physics.
    • Develop and manage relevant data and databases for quality assurance, imaging, and dosimetry records.
    • Be responsible for relevant radiotherapy data.
    • Use scientific judgment to determine suitability of highly specialist equipment for clinical use.
    • Maintain equipment and data records.
    • Coordinate and provide training as required.
    • Ensure compliance with ionising radiation regulations.
  • Teaching and Training
    • Provide teaching and training of students, radiographers, physicists, clinicians, management, and members of the public on relevant aspects of radiotherapy.
    • Participate in teaching and training of clinical oncologists.
    • Assist in training and supervision of trainee physicists.
  • Research and Development
    • Conduct evaluation, research, and development to improve clinical practice and understanding of radiotherapy process and technology.
    • Supervise other physicists, staff groups, research assistants, and research students.
  • Professional Development
    • Participate in Continuing Professional Development scheme.
    • Keep abreast of latest technical and scientific developments.
    • Attend suitable seminars and courses.
Requirements
  • Qualifications, knowledge, and experience to act as Medical Physics Expert under IR(ME)R within the field of radiotherapy.
  • Expert knowledge and extensive practical experience of all main areas of radiotherapy physics.
  • Acceptance testing and commissioning of radiotherapy equipment and Quality Assurance Techniques.
  • Understanding of patient and staff risks arising from the use of ionising radiation and radioactive sources for radiotherapy.
