Student Counsellor

WhereToTalk is seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Student Counsellor to join our team at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland.
About the RoleThis is a hybrid permanent role, working 0.6 FTE, 3 days a week. As a Student Counsellor, you will be responsible for assessing the needs of students who present with emotional difficulties, providing high-quality counselling and support, and making referrals to external agencies as needed.
Key Responsibilities- Undertake initial assessments of students to assess their needs, monitor risk, and offer appropriate responses.
- Provide counselling and support according to professional practice and in compliance with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy Ethical Framework.
- Liaise with Wellbeing colleagues, academic staff, and external services to negotiate appropriate support and responses for individual students.
- Provide therapeutic support to students to address their presenting emotional or psychological issues.
- Work flexibly from home or campus, according to service needs.
- Participate in service development and liaise with other professional staff, as directed by the Counselling Manager.
- Maintain appropriate records and make use of IT-based systems to provide written reports as directed.
- Assist in the development and delivery of Wellbeing workshops and training for students and staff.
- Undertake continuing professional development and engage in external clinical supervision and case management.
This role requires a professional counselling qualification, BACP accreditation, or UKCP registration. You will also need extensive experience in providing counselling, conducting mental health assessments, and working within student services.
We are looking for a highly developed practitioner with excellent assessment skills, the ability to make professional judgments, and a capacity to work with a range of professionals. You will also need excellent organizational, communication, and networking skills, as well as outstanding customer service skills.
