The Department of Physics at Imperial College London is seeking a skilled Mechanical Instrumentation Workshop Manager to oversee the facility's management and provisioning.

Job Overview

As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for budgeting, Workplace Health & Safety, scheduling, quality checking, and subcontracting. You will supervise a core team of technicians, oversee local apprentice tutors, and provide a safe working environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Run the Mechanical Instrumentation Workshop, providing facilities to researchers and technicians
  • Review and prioritise workshop requests, managing requirements, scheduling, and charging work where necessary
  • Provide troubleshooting and quality checking to ensure timely and economical delivery of research needs
  • Serve as a technical expert for research staff and students to solve workshop requests and advise on complex design and manufacture needs
About You

We are looking for an individual with experience in mechanical engineering, holding a BTEC/HNC qualification or equivalent. You should have substantial experience working in a mechanical workshop or equivalent, with knowledge of design and production, CNC production methods, and operation of general workshop manual machine tools.

You will also need experience with procurement of goods and services within a research or engineering environment and ability to assess and change priorities as requirements and deadlines evolve.
