About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Criminal and Enforcement Lawyer to join our team at Essex County Council. As a key member of our Dispute Resolution and Employment Law Team, you will play a crucial role in providing high-quality legal advice and support to our clients.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in criminal law, with experience in advising on and litigating complex cases. You will be responsible for providing expert guidance on criminal and enforcement matters, including fraud and fraudulent trading cases, consumer protection prosecutions, and planning and environmental enforcement prosecutions.

You will work closely with our clients, including Essex Trading Standards and Essex Highways, to provide tailored advice and support. Your excellent communication and interpersonal skills will enable you to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including colleagues, clients, and partners.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide timely and accurate legal advice to clients on criminal and enforcement matters
  • Advise on and litigate complex cases, including fraud and fraudulent trading cases, consumer protection prosecutions, and planning and environmental enforcement prosecutions
  • Build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including colleagues, clients, and partners
  • Contribute to the development of new external streams of business and maintain existing client relationships
  • Work collaboratively with the team to deliver high-quality legal services and achieve business objectives
Requirements
  • Qualified solicitor, barrister, or Chartered Legal Executive with current membership of the Law Society or Bar Standards Board or Cilex
  • Minimum 2 years' post-qualification experience in criminal law, with a strong background in advising on and litigating complex cases
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Commercial awareness and the ability to contribute to the development of new external streams of business
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the team to deliver high-quality legal services and achieve business objectives
