Criminal Enforcement Lawyer

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Criminal and Enforcement Lawyer to join our team at Essex County Council. As a key member of our Dispute Resolution and Employment Law Team, you will be responsible for providing high-quality legal advice and guidance to clients, including internal and external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
- Providing timely and accurate legal advice on criminal and enforcement matters, including fraud and fraudulent trading cases, consumer protection prosecutions, and planning and environmental enforcement prosecutions.
- Working closely with colleagues to deliver high-quality legal services to clients, including Essex Trading Standards and Essex Highways.
- Acting as a legal practitioner and advocate, providing specialist advice and support to colleagues and clients.
- Building strong relationships with internal and external partners, including schools, other local authorities, and the private sector.
- Maintaining and progressing a full and varied caseload, including contentious and non-contentious criminal and enforcement matters.
Requirements:
- Qualified solicitor, barrister, or Chartered Legal Executive with current membership of the Law Society or Bar Standards Board or Cilex.
- Experience of working within a legal setting in a politically sensitive environment, providing high-quality advice to a wide range of clients.
- Experience advising at all stages of the criminal investigation process, including pre-charge, reviewing evidence, assessing suitable legislation, and drafting charges.
- Experience running criminal cases from laying the Information's through to sentencing, demonstrating attention to detail at every stage.
- Experience acting as the reviewing lawyer on criminal matters, drafting and serving formal Enforcement Notices, and instructing and liaising with Counsel.
- Commercial awareness and professional credibility to maintain the existing client base.
- Ability to work and think independently, while maintaining focus on delivering team and corporate objectives.
- Proven track record of building strong working relationships across a large, complex organisation and with internal and external partners/stakeholders and clients.
