NPL is the UK's National Measurement Institute providing measurement expertise that underpins UK prosperity and quality of life. We are a world-leading research facility, bringing together scientists and engineers from almost every field to help save lives, protect the environment, and enable citizens to feel safe and secure.
We are investing in Data Science to address scientific challenges within the application areas of Advanced Manufacturing, Energy & Environment, and Life Sciences & Health. The Data Science team at NPL is expanding and we are looking for motivated candidates at all levels of experience from early career to experienced scientists/data engineers/software developers.
Your role will focus on bringing best practice from software development into scientific data management to drive the NPL Scientific Digital Transformation program. Working alongside world-leading scientists at NPL and our partners in academia and industry, you will help advance their research by creating optimal data infrastructures throughout varied projects.
You will be working across the entire data pipeline across a range of application areas, from configuring data sources to integrating analytical tools. You will be developing data architectures, protocols, and software tools to promote the FAIR principles and enable knowledge representation and reasoning.
Example projects you may be involved in include:
- Creating data structures and storage architecture for advanced materials.
- Defining data quality metrics for medical data sets used to train machine learning systems.
- Building information models to represent scientific experiments.
- Identifying, designing, and implementing improved research data processing: automating manual data capture, optimizing data delivery, redesigning infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.
The NPL Data Science Team is spread across three geographical locations. We are currently looking to hire in both Glasgow and Teddington, but travel between the three sites will be required on occasions.
