Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist in the Children and Young People's Gender Service (South West)

The successful applicant(s) will join a multi-disciplinary team delivering a new Children and Young People's Gender Service (South West).

This role is suited to a psychiatrist with expertise in child development, neurodiversity, and adolescent mental health, a strong ethic of reflective practice and a passion for multi-disciplinary team working. The consultant is primarily responsible for delivering a high-quality clinical service, as well as contributing to the leadership and strategic development of the service.

This role will involve (but is not limited to) triaging referrals into the service in a multi-professional setting, local area consultation and advice pre referral where relevant or indicated, joint assessment with senior psychological staff, and holistic consultations tailored to age and presentation with children and young people expressing gender diversity.

Main Duties of the Job

Clinical (to include):

  • Triaging referrals into the service in a multi-professional setting
  • Local area consultation and advice pre referral where relevant or indicated
  • Joint assessment with senior psychological staff and management of children and young people who are experiencing gender incongruence
  • Undertake detailed and complex assessments aligned to a pre-agreed approach, using a high degree of clinical expertise
  • Support the development of care plans including using clinical judgement regarding priority of support, expected timelines, etc.
  • Liaise with other health professionals and social care teams as necessary to support appropriate care for patients
  • To provide consultation and support to the MDT complex case support, risk management, diagnostic dilemmas
  • Holistic consultations tailored to age and presentation with children and young people with/without parents/carers including but not limited to social history, education, development, learning needs, sexual health, physical health, self-harm and suicide
  • To be a key member of the MDT, planning and guiding individualised care for each CYP, championing and leading on mental health and related needs
  • Communicate complex information in skilled and sensitive manner with a specialist caseload of young people and their parents/carers and where needed with children's social care

Qualifications & Training

Essential

  • MRCPsych
  • CCT Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
  • Full GMC Registration & inclusion on Specialist GMC Register
  • Sec and Approved Clinician status (or undertaking to obtain this on taking up the post)

Desirable

  • Higher academic qualification MD, PhD or equivalent

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working with young people in mental health community settings
  • Experience of effective multidisciplinary team working.
  • Experience of effective multi-agency partnership.
  • Ability to undertake full range of consultant responsibilities.
  • Evidence of leadership experience
  • Therapeutic skills relevant to the management of children and young people with complex presentations
  • Knowledge and understanding of the safeguarding procedures

Desirable

  • Evidence of a special interest and expertise that complements those of other consultants in the department and is consistent with the Trust's service strategy
  • Evidence of service development experience, such as setting up a new service and service evaluation
  • Familiarity in and/or experience of a wide range of Autism and other communication disorder assessments
  • Experience in supporting gender diverse children in a range of health settings

Clinical Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Up to date knowledge of the Cass Review
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience of working in children's services, specifically with children with complex health care needs
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience in caring for children with a range of safeguarding concerns and presentations
  • Broad range of IT skills

Desirable

  • Knowledge of and application of the use of common tools for assessing developmental disorders
  • Excellent knowledge of child and adolescent physical, cognitive and emotional development

Clinical Governance and Audit

Essential

  • Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies
  • Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and evidence of participation and evidence of prior audit and QIP activity
  • Positive approach to evidence-based practice
  • Participation in continuing professional development (CPD) scheme and, where relevant, evidence of

  • Knowledge of the principles involved in research
