About the Role

The Pirbright Institute is seeking a highly skilled Epidemiologist to join our team as an Epidemiological Modeller. This is an exciting opportunity to work on the transmission and control of viral diseases of livestock, particularly Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) and African Swine Fever (ASF).

As an Epidemiological Modeller, you will be responsible for developing and analysing mathematical models to understand the spread of FMD and ASF. You will work closely with our Transmission Biology and African Swine Fever groups to integrate data from experimental studies into models for decision support.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in a relevant field, such as epidemiology, mathematics, or statistics, with a strong background in mathematical modelling. You will have excellent communication skills and be able to discuss your work with policy makers and report outputs from the models.

This is a fixed-term contract until 31/07/2026, and you will be based at our Woking site. You will be part of a dynamic and vibrant community of staff, and we offer a range of benefits, including a generous pension scheme and 25 days annual leave.

Main Responsibilities
  • Develop and analyse mathematical models for the transmission and control of FMD and ASF
  • Work with our Transmission Biology and African Swine Fever groups to integrate data into models
  • Discuss models and outputs with policy makers
  • Write up modelling work for publication in scientific journals and present at conferences
Requirements
  • PhD in a relevant field, such as epidemiology, mathematics, or statistics
  • Strong background in mathematical modelling
