Job Description:

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Class Teacher to join our team at York Steiner School. As a Class Teacher, you will be responsible for creating a nurturing and purposeful learning environment that fosters the academic, social, emotional, and intellectual growth of our students.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish good classroom habits and routines to promote a positive class dynamic.
  • Develop a deep understanding of each child's strengths and weaknesses to structure work accordingly.
  • Provide a balanced curriculum based on an understanding of Waldorf pedagogy and child development.
  • Maintain good discipline and develop children's confidence to ensure effective learning.
  • Work collaboratively with classroom assistants, subject teachers, and learning support staff.
  • Develop children's critical thinking and problem-solving skills, perseverance, academic curiosity, and independent study and research habits.
  • Engage in pedagogical study and discussion with colleagues and address areas of concern or need.
  • Share subject knowledge with other teachers and classes as relevant.
  • Strive to be a reflective practitioner and participate actively in the appraisal process.

Monitoring Progress and Parent Communication:

  • Take overall responsibility for the progress of pupils, including feedback, assessment, and monitoring.
  • Organise regular class and one-to-one parents' evenings.
  • Complete detailed end-of-year reports.
  • Provide necessary updates to parents as and when appropriate.
  • Support and participate in the enrolment process for new pupils.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the purchase of materials for the class.
  • Organise class trips, events, and festivals.
  • Provide cover for absent colleagues when needed.

Compliance:

  • Maintain the classroom environment to a high standard and observe Health and Safety policies and procedures.
  • Participate in staff meetings as relevant.
  • Operate within the school's policies and procedures, including safeguarding.
  • Attend statutory and non-statutory training courses as required.

Person Specification:

Qualifications, Training, and Experience:

  • Teacher qualification (either PGCE/QTS or Steiner Waldorf training).
  • Degree-level qualification.
  • Understanding of Steiner Waldorf Education and the Ethos of York Steiner School.
  • At least two years teaching experience.
  • IT skills, including Microsoft Office and G Suite.
  • Maths and English GCSE.

  • Adaptability in the context of a small school.

Benefits:

Annual leave: 28 days (inclusive of bank holidays) in the first year, 31 days in the second year before rising to 33 days after 3 years (pro-rata). 12-month probationary period.
