Job Description

As a key member of the Safran Electrical & Power team, the New Program Buyer will be responsible for managing and coordinating the Purchasing function on new programs at Pitstone. This will involve managing multiple vendors, typically around 20 per project, and overseeing projects with varying levels of complexity. The successful candidate will have project budget responsibility, typically ranging from £1M to £3M per program, excluding non-recurring costs and CAPEX. The role requires strong supplier relationship management, with a focus on ensuring that suppliers meet Safran Quality requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and facilitate all sourcing activity, aligning core commodity strategies with supplier selection and future product roadmaps.
  • Ensure deployment of Design for Manufacture (DFM) processes with early supplier engagement, managing and reporting design evolution throughout the New Product Introduction (NPI) phases.
  • Follow a robust DTC methodology, challenging design requirements, potential over-engineering, and scope creep.
  • Create, conduct, and close RFQ/RFP packages with selected supplier choice panels.
  • Manage deliveries of purchase orders, communicate weekly clear-to-build status to program teams, and work with suppliers to ensure any deviations and technical issues are captured and agreed with stakeholders.
  • Escalate significant issues requiring management intervention or awareness.
  • Work with suppliers to resolve issues impacting performance, such as quality discrepancies, book-in queries, permits/concessions, or invoice query resolution and corrective actions.
  • Support daily IPT meetings for assigned projects.
  • Ensure project costs are captured and reported monthly via BoM costing models.
  • Manage returns to vendors via the NCT process.
  • Work closely with engineering to ensure design evolutions align with manufacturing lead times.
  • Explore and exploit opportunities for cost improvement on the project, ensuring commodity strategy is aligned.
  • Work with Supplier Account Manager/Commodity Manager to negotiate prices, terms, conditions, and agreements.
  • Assist with BOM and MRP maintenance, including part # creation and planning parameter loading.
  • Provide senior management with weekly updates on program status and risks.
  • Risk Analysis – Identify and resolve supply issues to meet business commitments.
  • Develop a competent network of capable suppliers and partners to support a dynamic, agile, and lean environment.
  • Take a proactive approach to aggressive cost reduction and design influence.

Requirements

  • Purchasing/sourcing experience within a manufacturing environment, preferably in the aerospace sector.
  • Astute commercial awareness.
  • Proven experience in liaising with customers or suppliers, with a background of negotiation.
  • Demonstrates healthy and productive influencing ability, applicable within an engineering/design/manufacturing environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with individuals across various functions and seniority levels.
  • Demonstrates versatility in dealing with different cultures and time zones.
  • High motivation to learn, develop, and perform in a fast-paced rapid prototype environment.
  • Attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple, conflicting priorities simultaneously.
  • Experience with metric creation and data presentations, with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Bias for action: Decisive and takes the initiative.
  • Experience with improving processes.
  • Good PC skills, confident with the use of MRP systems and Microsoft Office (Excel & PowerPoint).
  • Evidence of written English at interview stage, through certification of a formal English or technical qualification studied in the UK or overseas in English.
