About the Role
Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced Senior Staff Nurse to join our Intensive Recovery team on a permanent basis. As a Senior Staff Nurse, you will play a crucial role in providing high-quality patient care and contributing to the overall success of the unit.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage a group of patients within the specialty, delivering individualized and personalized direct patient care.
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care, demonstrating appropriate practice and specialist advice.
- Administer prescribed medication, including transfusion of blood and blood products, and take responsibility for assessing and recognizing emergencies in the speciality.
- Ensure patients receive high-quality clinical care and a good patient experience, having regard for their customs, religious beliefs, and doctrines.
- Provide leadership, support, and guidance to staff in monitoring the planning delivery, and evaluation of individualized care.
- Be accountable for your practice in line with the NMC code of professional conduct and take every reasonable opportunity to sustain and improve your knowledge and professional competence.
- Ensure safe and effective care for complex patients requiring advanced clinical skills, and responsible for carrying out specialist nursing procedures to area.
- Ensure sensitive patient records are stored appropriately, and staff take precautions to minimize the risk of cross-infection.
- Communicate effectively with patients/carers/families regarding disease treatment and management.
- Facilitate a high-quality, cost-effective specialist service through monitoring and audit, and other quality initiatives agreed by the Trust.
- Identify and intervene where circumstances contribute to an unsafe environment for patients and staff, and bring instances to the attention of the Sister/Charge Nurse for the area.
- Develop a culture that is challenging, stimulating, rewarding, and supportive, and assist the Sister/Charge Nurse in achieving this goal.
- Act as a mentor/assessor to unqualified staff, and provide education, advice, and support to a team of nurses.
- Utilize research findings in the delivery of specialist patient care, and develop new ways of working and disseminate relevant information to staff.
- Maintain accurate records of the clinical service, and ensure confidentiality of information is adhered to.
- Organize your own work and manage your own caseload and practice, identifying and maintaining supportive networks for yourself and other staff members.
- Take an active role in risk assessment, supporting implementation of strategies to minimize risk, and ensuring incidents and near misses are reported.
Requirements
To be successful in this role, you will need to have:
- Experience and competence in the management of patients within the speciality.
- Experience of teaching/assessing/supervising others in a clinical setting.
- Supervision of junior staff.
- Up-to-date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues, and evidence of involvement and leadership in teaching and mentoring learners.
- Good communication skills and ability to deal with sensitive information, including dealing with distressed relatives and care of terminally ill patients.
- An understanding of audit and research-based nursing practice, and the ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate specialist care delivered to patients/clients.
- A relevant post-registration qualification, mentorship/teaching qualification, and BSC/1st degree (health-related) or equivalent qualification/training and experience.
- Registration with the NMC as a Registered Nurse.
