Job Title: Principal Nuclear Warhead Safety Engineer

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Nuclear Warhead Safety Engineer to join our team at the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE). As a key member of our Warhead Engineering Surety Group, you will be responsible for providing technical assessments and advice on the major hazards associated with nuclear and explosives products.

About the Role

This is a challenging and rewarding role that requires a strong background in science or engineering, with a focus on nuclear safety. You will work closely with our team to develop and implement safety engineering solutions, and provide safety information to operators to incorporate into their Safety Cases.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical assessments and advice on the major hazards associated with nuclear and explosives products
  • Develop and implement safety engineering solutions
  • Provide safety information to operators to incorporate into their Safety Cases
  • Work closely with the Warhead Engineering Surety Group to ensure the safe design and operation of nuclear warheads
  • Collaborate with other teams to develop and implement safety policies and procedures
Requirements
  • Degree or postgraduate qualifications in Science or Engineering or a related subject
  • PhD candidates would also be well-suited to this role
  • Previous experience working on munitions and/or nuclear reactors or other high-hazard industry
  • Knowledge of Safety Case content and ALARP determination
  • Understanding of Defence or Civil nuclear regulations
  • Ability to undertake critical analysis and assessment of complex systems
  • Effective communication skills (written, presentation and spoken)
  • Leadership or management of related safety projects
