Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Nuclear Warhead Safety Engineer to join our team at the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE). As a key member of our Warhead Engineering Surety Group, you will be responsible for providing technical assessments and advice on the major hazards associated with nuclear and explosives products.

Key Responsibilities
  • Undertake technical assessments and provide safety information to Operators to incorporate into their Safety Cases.
  • Provide advice on the major hazards associated with nuclear and explosives products.
  • Develop and implement safety engineering solutions to mitigate risks.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure safety is integrated into all aspects of product development.
  • Conduct safety assessments and provide recommendations for improvement.
Requirements
  • Degree or postgraduate qualifications in Science or Engineering or a related subject.
  • PhD candidates would also be well-suited for this role.
  • Previous experience working on munitions and/or nuclear reactors or other high-hazard industries.
  • Knowledge of Safety Case content and ALARP determination.
  • Understanding of Defence or Civil nuclear regulations.
  • Ability to undertake critical analysis and assessment of complex systems.
  • Effective communication skills (written, presentation, and spoken).
  • Leadership or management of related safety projects.

Security Clearance

You will need to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role. This will be funded by AWE. You must be a British Citizen who has been resident in the UK for the past 5 years to apply for SC clearance and 10 years for DV.
