Job Title: Principal Materials Scientist/FA Engineer

About the Role:

We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Materials Scientist/FA Engineer to join our team at Leonardo in Edinburgh. As a key member of our technical service group, you will be responsible for providing a value-added defect investigation service to the company, taking into account customer requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide a value-added defect investigation service to the company in a timely manner.
  • Supervise a small group providing technical service to the company, including lab facilities and responsibilities for H&S, RPS, Capital, and Maintenance.
  • Supervise others within the group, supporting their development in the field of defect investigation and materials science.
  • Provide materials science support to the engineering community.
  • Oversight of investigative work, as dictated by workload and technical limitations, to external suppliers where appropriate.
  • Prioritizing work, in line with business needs to ensure best value of resources.
  • Working across engineering disciplines providing support in mechanical, electronic, and optical activities.
  • Mentor, coach, and teach other engineers and scientists.
  • Advance the expertise in the field of materials science, especially in the field of adhesives and surface preparation.
  • Lead the technical direction and provide oversight needed for the team to achieve novel approaches to defect investigation.

Requirements:

  • A degree in a relevant science or engineering discipline or have equivalent work experience.
  • Be able to self-manage, self-motivate, and look to continuously develop.
  • Have the ability to develop lab skills such as in micro-section preparation, optical and electron microscopy.
  • Be able to communicate effectively across different disciplines both verbally and in written form.
  • Be willing to work on your own or as part of a team to resolve technical issues.
  • Have experience in defect investigation and have a methodical and thorough approach to this discipline.
  • Be able to advise on materials science issues to the wider Leonardo community.
  • Well-rounded experience in all phases of the product life cycle across several projects and preferably in a number of engineering domains.
  • Experience of customer/supplier relations and working within multi-discipline project teams.
  • Experience with techniques such as scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis, optical microscopy, micro-section preparation, vacuum processes, X-ray imaging, and other NDT methods.
