Job Title: Principal Materials Scientist

Leonardo is seeking a highly skilled Principal Materials Scientist to join our team in Edinburgh. As a key member of our technical service group, you will be responsible for providing expert advice and support to our engineering community.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide defect investigation services to the company, taking into account customer requirements.
  • Manage the day-to-day running of the technical service group, including lab facilities and supervision of others.
  • Support the development of others within the group, providing guidance and mentorship.
  • Collaborate with engineering disciplines to provide materials science support.
  • Outsource investigative work to external suppliers as needed.
  • Prioritize work to ensure best value of resources.
  • Develop and maintain expertise in materials science, particularly in adhesives and surface preparation.
  • Lead the technical direction of the team, driving novel approaches to defect investigation.
Requirements:
  • Relevant degree in science or engineering, or equivalent work experience.
  • Ability to self-manage, self-motivate, and continuously develop.
  • Lab skills, including micro-section preparation, optical and electron microscopy.
  • Effective communication across disciplines, both verbally and in writing.
  • Experience in defect investigation, with a methodical and thorough approach.
  • Ability to advise on materials science issues to the wider Leonardo community.
  • Well-rounded experience in product lifecycle, across multiple projects and engineering domains.
  • Customer/supplier relations and multi-discipline project team experience.
  • Experience with techniques such as SEM, optical microscopy, micro-section preparation, and X-ray imaging.
