The position of Head of Communications & Engagement offers an exciting opportunity to join our team and contribute to the success of our high-profile programme of work.

About the Role
  • This is a senior leadership role that requires a strategic thinker with excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • You will design and deliver the overarching strategy for stakeholder engagement across the Directorate’s work, ensuring effective collaboration with local government elections teams, the Electoral Commission, ministers, parliamentarians, civil society organizations, and other government departments.

As the Head of Communications & Engagement, you will lead on external communications and handling, including press office and Parliamentary publications. You will also manage the cross-Directorate briefing and correspondence function, ensuring consistency of message and timely responses to correspondence and PQs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and deliver the stakeholder engagement strategy for the Directorate’s work, ensuring effective collaboration with stakeholders.
  • Work closely with the elections sector, managing the stakeholder governance framework and ensuring necessary strategic and detailed input from the sector.
  • Manage the delivery of change programmes, working across each project to identify sector requirements to support change delivery.
  • Lead on external communications and handling, including press office and Parliamentary publications.
  • Manage the cross-Directorate briefing and correspondence function, ensuring consistency of message and timely responses.
  • Lead and manage a high-performing team of around 10-12 FTE.
Requirements
  • Proven leadership and management skills, with the ability to set the agenda and prioritize for a busy engagement team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience of translating complex messages into quality written products for a range of audiences.
  • Significant experience of stakeholder management and/or communications.
  • Strong planning and project management skills, including delivering products and announcements at pace in a sensitive environment.
  • Excellent relationship management skills, with the ability to build productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • The ability to work under pressure to urgent or shifting deadlines, including the ability to work flexibly on quickly changing or multiple priorities.
  • Experience and confidence in working with ministers or senior leaders, specifically in communications in government.
  • Experience in working with digital services and/or teams.
