Chief Animal Care Officer

The National Zoological Society of Wales, also known as the Welsh Mountain Zoo, is seeking a dedicated and experienced professional to lead the animal care team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for driving standards and compliance of the animal department, supporting the charity's conservation mission, and contributing to the development and financial success of the charity.
Key Responsibilities:- Manage and coordinate the day-to-day operations of the animal department, including managing animal care, welfare, and enrichment.
- Team leadership and management of the animal care department - Strong leadership and oversight of the animal care team.
- Animal care, welfare, and husbandry oversight – Ensure the highest standard of care and welfare are achieved across all taxa, within the framework of the Five Domains, membership requirements, and species-specific guidelines.
- Compliance and health and safety – Oversee development, implementation, and monitor compliance of institutional and statutory health and safety policies, RAs, and SWPs across the department.
- Strategic planning and development - Contribute to and support the zoo's strategic goals, ensuring alignment with conservation, education, welfare, and operational priorities.
- Budgeting and resource management - Manage budgets and oversee procurement for the husbandry team, ensuring efficient use of resources to meet operational and strategic goals.
- Work with the Director of Living Collections to plan and implement animal-related projects and improvements.
- Experienced in organising and completing animal transfers outside of the UK.
- Experienced in the use of Species360 and other relevant software.
- Animal Care: Comprehensive knowledge of animal husbandry, behaviour, and welfare.
- Organisational Skills: Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
- Passion for Conservation: A strong commitment to animal welfare and conservation.
- Strategic Thinking: Ability to think strategically and contribute to the zoo's long-term goals.
