As a Research Scientist at the Medical Research Council, you will be responsible for undertaking cutting-edge research in early human embryo development. Your key responsibilities will include:

1. Conducting research

Undertake research aimed at identifying the molecular mechanisms that underlie embryo plasticity.

2. Providing intellectual energy and independent thinking

Contribute to the development of research projects and play a major role in shaping the overall aims and success of the group.

3. Integrating different activities

Ensure the successful delivery of research projects by integrating different activities and approaches.

4. Interacting with staff and students

Interact effectively with a wide range of staff, students, and others to ensure the smooth running of the research group.

5. Managing equipment and resources

Take responsibility for the use of communal facilities and manage equipment as required.

6. Writing and presenting research

Write scientific papers and present at internal meetings and conferences.

7. Ensuring compliance with policies and regulations

Ensure that research is conducted in accordance with good practice and in compliance with local policies and legal requirements.

8. Identifying opportunities for funding and equipment

Identify opportunities for additional funding and apply for external grants where appropriate.

9. Line management responsibilities

Undertake line management responsibilities, including staff development and performance management, in accordance with the MRC's policies and procedures.

You will report to Dr Marta Shahbazi and will liaise with other Research Support staff, Postdoctoral Scientists, and students, not only in your group, but also across the LMB and with external collaborators.

Academic Qualifications and Experience:

PhD in a relevant biological subject.

Significant postdoctoral research experience in early human embryo development.

Technical Skills and Expertise:

Experience of and proven ability to perform techniques relevant to the project, and knowledge of the field.

The following skills and expertise are needed:

  • Knowledge of the regulations that apply to human embryo research in the UK.
  • Experience handling research consent forms and organising human embryo donations.
  • Experience performing classical embryology techniques such as injections, aggregations, embryo manipulations, embryo thawing, and culture.
  • Confocal imaging experience, including image analysis.
  • Experience performing molecular biology techniques.
  • Human embryonic stem cell culture experience, including 3D cultures, naïve embryonic stem cell cultures, and extra-embryonic stem cell cultures.

Track Record of Research:

This will include achievements and significant contributions to published papers.
