About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Palliative Care Specialist to join our dynamic team at Northampton General Hospital. As a key member of our Specialist Palliative Care Team, you will play a vital role in delivering high-quality care to patients and their families.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage a caseload of patients with specialist needs, working collaboratively with the wider multi-disciplinary team.
  • Attend the weekly Specialist Palliative Care multidisciplinary team meeting, contributing to the discussion and patient assessment/care planning.
  • Undertake a comprehensive holistic patient assessment, ensuring that results of patients' holistic needs assessment are considered when making decisions about patient care.
  • Prescribe and review medication for therapeutic effectiveness, appropriate to patient need and in accordance with evidence-based practice and national and local protocols.
  • Provide Level 2 psychological support for patients and their carers, referring patients with complex needs to the Macmillan Clinical Psychologist as necessary.
Person Specification
  • Knowledge and Experience
    • Essential:
      • In-depth specialist palliative and end of life care experience.
      • Clear up-to-date knowledge of current statutory frameworks/national policy.
      • Extensive post-registration experience.
      • Ability to manage caseload and work as part of an MDT.
      • To have provided education to all levels of staff.
      • Evidence of experience of holistically assessing specialist palliative and dying patients in an acute hospital setting.
    • Desirable:
      • Evidence of research, publications, conference presentations.
      • Evidence of local audit, participation in or leadership of.
  • Skills
    • Essential:
      • Demonstrates a positive, confident attitude and has an empathetic approach to patients, families, carers and staff.
      • Ability to demonstrate wide range of effective communication skills.
      • Experience of teaching/mentoring/assessing and supporting colleagues.
      • Ability to manage caseload and work as part of an MDT.
      • Demonstrates experience of autonomous working.
  • Personal Qualities
    • Essential:
      • Demonstrates a positive, confident attitude and has an empathetic approach to patients, families, carers and staff.
      • Ability to use initiative with excellent time management skills.
      • Motivation to pursue personal development, recognising own boundaries and limitations.
      • Ability to prioritise and remain calm, under pressure of changing work demands.
  • Qualifications
    • Essential:
      • NMC registration.
      • Teaching/education qualification.
      • Post-registration palliative care/relevant field course.
      • Degree level education.
      • Evidence of recent CPD.
