Research Associate in Geotechnical Engineering for Nuclear Waste Disposal

We are seeking a highly skilled Research Associate to join our team at Imperial College London. As a Research Associate, you will play a key role in developing models for the thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical behaviour of bentonite barriers in nuclear waste disposal, using conventional and Machine Learning approaches.

This is an exciting opportunity to work with world-leading experts in Geotechnical Engineering and collaborate with our research partners in the UK and the USA. You will gain experience working on cutting-edge research on a topic of great environmental significance and contribute to the development of novel experimental apparatus and techniques.

As a Research Associate, you will be responsible for developing, coding, and using novel constitutive models that can simulate the coupled thermal, hydraulic, mechanical, and chemical (THMC) behaviour of soils in temperatures reaching 200oC. You will also use Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to develop certain aspects of these models and techniques to calibrate them.

You will attend monthly online meetings and have the opportunity to spend up to four weeks in Texas A&M University and Sandia National Laboratories. You will be expected to publish your research findings in leading journals and attend international conferences. At the end of your post, you will co-organise an international workshop that will bring the project partners together with teams from across the world.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and apply novel constitutive models for THMC behaviour of soils
  • Use AI and ML to develop certain aspects of these models and techniques to calibrate them
  • Collaborate with research partners in the UK and the USA to share data and interpret soil behaviour
  • Attend monthly online meetings and spend up to four weeks in Texas A&M University and Sandia National Laboratories
  • Publish research findings in leading journals and attend international conferences
Requirements:
  • Demonstrable experience in computer programming in relation to constitutive modelling of soils or application of machine learning techniques to engineering problems
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • The ability to develop and apply new concepts
  • Willingness to work as part of a team and be open-minded and cooperative
