Job Summary

The Research Aide position is a critical role in the wheat breeding and genetics program at the University of Idaho. The successful candidate will assist in planning and conducting field research, performing pre-established research procedures, and maintaining research space and equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in planning and conducting field research, including seed preparation, planting, irrigation scheduling, and harvesting plots.
  • Perform pre-established research procedures, including data collection, laboratory testing, and equipment maintenance.
  • Supervise seasonal help and maintain safe working conditions.
  • Assist with receipt and inspection of raw materials, ordering and stocking of materials and equipment.
  • Operate electronic and scientific equipment, collect laboratory or field data, and prepare materials for testing.
  • Perform specialized or routine standardized tests, operate and maintain laboratory/field equipment, and clean glassware and work areas.
  • Read, record, and file reports and correspondence, enter data, and maintain specimen logs, test results, and supplies used.
  • Assure proper labeling and paperwork for the receipt and shipping of specimens, distribute, maintain, and order research supplies.
Requirements
  • Collecting and recording data following pre-established procedures or protocols.
  • Using a computer to collect and record data.
  • Accomplishing goals or completion of projects in a team environment.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and be able to meet policy requirements for driving university-owned vehicles.
  • Possess an Idaho Limited Pesticide Applicator's License or be able to obtain one within six months.
  • Ability to travel overnight and to remote site locations.
  • Ability to work nonstandard business hours when the workload dictates.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Science, Agronomy, Soil Science, Crop Science, or a related field.
  • Large field equipment operation, such as tractors, sprayers, 4-wheelers, combines, and trailers.
  • Hands-on research experiences in small grains cultivar development.
  • Understanding of basic mechanics for combines, tractors, 4-wheelers, sprayers, threshers.
  • Ability to work independently with general supervision and oversight to complete tasks.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • Must be able to lift, carry, and/or otherwise move up to 50 lbs.
  • May be required to work with toxic, volatile, or corrosive chemicals and/or carcinogenic substances.
  • May be required to work in adverse environmental conditions (dusty, hot, or cold conditions outdoors).
