Position Overview
The Agricultural Research Assistant plays a crucial role in executing established research protocols under the guidance of a research scientist within the wheat breeding and genetics sector. This position is integral to the planning and execution of field studies that encompass all breeding activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare seeds and manage planting schedules.
- Oversee irrigation planning and maintenance of research plots.
- Conduct harvesting and grain processing activities.
- Collect and analyze data in accordance with established protocols.
- Order and manage supplies and equipment necessary for research.
- Supervise seasonal staff and ensure adherence to safety regulations.
Essential Duties
- Operate and maintain scientific and electronic equipment.
- Prepare materials for testing and perform routine standardized tests.
- Maintain cleanliness of laboratory and field equipment.
- Document and file reports, ensuring accurate data entry and specimen logs.
- Manage the receipt and shipping of specimens, ensuring proper labeling and documentation.
- Assist in the distribution and maintenance of research supplies.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Experience:
- Experience in data collection and recording following established protocols.
- Proficiency in using computers for data management.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting.
Required Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
Additional Requirements:
- Valid driver's license and compliance with university vehicle policies.
- Possession of an Idaho Limited Pesticide Applicator's License or ability to obtain within six months.
- Willingness to travel to remote locations and work non-standard hours as needed.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific field.
- Experience operating large agricultural machinery.
- Hands-on experience in small grains cultivar development.
- Basic mechanical knowledge of agricultural equipment.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Physical Requirements:
- Capability to lift and move up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to work with potentially hazardous materials.
- Willingness to work in various environmental conditions.
This position is contingent upon the availability of funding and work.
