About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Risk Communications and Community Engagement Specialist to join our team at the UK Health Security Agency. As a key member of our multidisciplinary team, you will be responsible for leading our risk communication and community engagement efforts, providing expert advice during outbreak responses and emergencies, and developing and implementing effective communication strategies to engage with communities and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the development and implementation of risk communication and community engagement strategies, including the design and delivery of training programs and capacity development initiatives.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance on risk communication and community engagement to colleagues and partners, including the development of evidence-based communication plans and materials.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with key stakeholders, including community groups, leaders, and other partners in the community and civil society.
  • Conduct rapid qualitative assessments and social science research to inform risk communication and community engagement strategies.
  • Develop and implement projects to strengthen capacity in risk communication and community engagement, including the development of training programs and materials.
  • Collaborate with partners in low- and middle-income countries to co-identify novel areas of research in response to current emerging needs.
  • Present at scientific conferences, meetings, and other fora to share knowledge and expertise.
Requirements
  • PhD or MSc in Social and Behavioural Science, Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology, Education, Communication, Public Relations, or another relevant Public Health Communications-related field.
  • Proven experience of developing and applying innovative approaches to risk communication and community engagement and/or in operational social science in outbreaks or other public health emergencies.
  • Proven experience of designing and conducting rapid qualitative assessments, social science research, and analysis, including participatory and qualitative methods, with proficiency in qualitative data analysis software such as NVivo, supported by peer-reviewed publications.
  • Proven experience in the development and implementation of RCCE and rapid social science strategies and plans in LMICs.
  • Experience of delivering training and/or capacity development in risk communications, community engagement, health promotion, operational social science, or communication for international development.
  • Experience of qualitative data collection and analysis, including community feedback data, during outbreak response.
  • Ability to provide a clear strategic direction for UK-PHRST Risk Communication and Community Engagement research and capacity strengthening, and to effectively apply Risk Communication and Community Engagement principles and concepts in acute emergency settings in countries eligible for UK-aid.
  • Highly effective verbal, written, and presentation communications skills; capable of constructing and delivering clear ideas and concepts concisely and accurately for diverse audiences.
  • Able to build and maintain effective relationships with co-workers and key stakeholders both in the UK and overseas.
  • Demonstrate appreciation and acknowledgment of the range and complexities of diversity; self-awareness in terms of emotional intelligence, biases, and personal triggers; cultural competence - cultural sensitivity and awareness.
