NHS Veteran Aware Training Project

The Veteran Aware trainers will drive the development of a skilled, educated, and inclusive NHS workforce to support providers in meeting the evolving needs of the Armed Forces community.

Job Purpose

This is an exciting new project within the VCHA programme and an opportunity to research, develop, and deliver a comprehensive training package for the NHS in England.

Using your knowledge and skills to deliver high-quality training will help to ensure that every member of the Armed Forces community who enters the NHS, as either a patient or member of staff, is understood.

Working with the VCHA team, you will be responsible for the delivery and implementation of all training materials within the programme.

You will lead the training team and be responsible for a region.

Key Responsibilities
  • Create training and education for Integrated Care Systems (ICS), Integrated Care Partnerships and Boards (ICP/B), and NHS Trusts so they are better able to understand, support and advise the Armed Forces community.
  • Deliver training within an allocated region.
  • Create a standardised Armed Forces awareness training product portfolio. This will include modules to support at executive and operational levels including for Armed Forces champions and healthcare staff.
  • Support ICB/Ss to develop and implement training strategies in order to improve awareness of the specific needs of the Armed Forces community and to improve outcomes and experience.
  • Produce and deliver a "Train the Trainer" package including a refresher training cycle for all organisations operating within the NHS in England.
  • Ensure all training products in the portfolio are aligned with equality, diversity and inclusion guidance and best practice.
  • Engage with public and patient voice groups to listen to their views and ensure training and associated products are delivered to meet the current needs of the Armed Forces community.
  • Work with, and champion, NHS services to assist in appropriate referrals to secure support including Op RESTORE, Op COURAGE and Op NOVA.
  • Support ICP/B/S's to develop health needs assessments which include the Armed Forces community so they can evidence they are delivering due regard within the context of the Armed Forces Covenant.
  • Develop training to support in the implementation of ICS-based frameworks to support Armed Forces families – serving (including mobile), reservist, veterans, and the bereaved – to better access health services and employment within the NHS where they live.
  • Working with the Communications and Engagement Lead and NHS England, to develop and share communications and awareness products to complement accreditation, education schemes and assurance and monitoring for professionals.
  • Support the capture of Armed Forces community data within organisations through robust training on identification of the Armed Forces community.
