Job Overview

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Chief Intellectual Property Attorney to join our team at Abcam. As a key member of our legal department, you will play a crucial role in developing and implementing our intellectual property strategy to support our expanding global business.

About the Role

The successful candidate will have a strong background in intellectual property law, with experience working in-house at a company or a combination of law firm and in-house experience. You will be responsible for providing expert advice on all aspects of intellectual property, including patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets. Your expertise will help us protect and manage our intellectual property portfolio, while also ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations.

Main Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement an intellectual property strategy that aligns with Abcam's business objectives.
  • Provide expert advice on all aspects of intellectual property, including patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets.
  • Manage and maintain our intellectual property portfolio, including patent review and approval processes.
  • Negotiate and draft agreements, such as supply agreements, licenses, research agreements, development agreements, confidentiality agreements, and material transfer agreements.
  • Conduct due diligence and freedom to operate analysis for new technologies and products.
  • Represent Abcam in adversarial proceedings, including IP litigation, European Oppositions, and U.S. IPRs, in collaboration with outside counsel.
Requirements
  • A degree (or advanced degree) in a biological science, chemistry, pharmacy, or other field relevant to genomic medicine.
  • Qualified UK Solicitor specialising in IP; Qualified European Patent Attorney; OR US JD with active bar membership and admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office - all with experience of working within the life sciences/biotechnology space.
  • Strong communication skills; able to work and communicate effectively with all levels of employees and management.
  • Has a track record for delivering results, taking ownership, and being accountable.
