Job Description

Senior Safety Engineer
Derby or Warrington / Hybrid
£48,000 - £62,500 + Excellent benefits
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Safety Engineer to join our team at Rolls-Royce SMR. As a Senior Safety Engineer, you will be responsible for providing technical expertise across the lifecycle of hardwired protection and accident management systems for the SMR nuclear power plant 'reactor island'.
This role involves working closely with engineering teams from across the reactor island and applying a structured systems engineering approach to design. You will be responsible for gathering and developing system requirements, translating these requirements into design specifications, and ensuring that the design is compliant against international standards.
Key responsibilities include:

  • Working with Plant Process Engineers and other C&I Engineers to gather and develop system requirements.
  • Translate these requirements into design specifications for the hardwired protection and accident management systems.
  • Assess and substantiate that the design specification meets the requirements.
  • Ensure that the design is compliant against international standards in particular, IEC 61513, IEC61226 and IEC61508.
  • Liaise with other disciplines to understand functional performance capabilities of components and systems to facilitate effective system design.
  • Support to planning and implementation of policies and procedures related to the life cycle of the systems.
  • Ensure that optimum solutions are provided for the RR SMR Nuclear Power Plant by supporting the procurement, operations, and maintenance aspects of the equipment.
  • Contribute to the production of safety cases and provide support in liaising with regulators and independent nuclear safety assessors.

We are looking for individuals with a minimum level of experience, training, and qualification. However, we are open to considering applicants who may not meet all of the requirements but have relevant experience and skills. If you are passionate about working in a dynamic and innovative environment, we encourage you to apply.
Key selection criteria for this role are:
Comprehensive C&I System Design Proficiency
Knowledge and experience in the systematic design lifecycle of C&I systems including specification, design, assessment, verification, testing, installation, commissioning and maintenance of safety or process critical C&I systems. This together with a good understanding of the principles of designing systems to be functionally resilient to faults (such as redundancy and diversity) would be beneficial.
Adherence to Industry Standards
Knowledge and experience of relevant industry standards for systems important to safety (e.g. IEC 61508, IEC 61226, IEC 61513).
Application of Advanced System Methodologies
Knowledge and experience of applying systems engineering methodologies including Model Based Systems Engineering to C&I systems.
Effective Stakeholder Communication
Experience in taking information, understanding, and presenting it in an appropriate and compelling format, which includes formal communications to the appropriate stakeholders.
Technical Oversight Proficiency
The ability to provide technical oversight of the work carried out by supply chain partners i.e., discharging the intelligent customer role.
Training & Qualification Requirements

• Hold a degree level qualification in one or more of the engineering disciplines of electrical, electronics, instrumentation, control systems, mechatronics, physics or computer science.

• Applicants without a degree who can nevertheless demonstrate suitable experience may also be considered.
Pay and Benefits
We anticipate paying a salary of between £48,000 - £62,500 (DOE) plus:

  • Bonus - Performance related bonus of up to 12.5%
  • Benefits Allowance – £2,200 per annum, enabling you to create a bespoke package
  • Pension - 12% employer and 6% employee contributions.
  • Holidays - 28 days holiday (+ public holidays) and the ability to buy or sell up to 4 days.
  • Private Medical Insurance - BUPA single cover health care
  • Life Assurance - 6x pensionable pay
  • £250 - One-off payment for new starters for home office purchases
