Job Description

At Durham University, we are seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join our Department of Physics as an Assistant Professor in Condensed Matter Physics. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of internationally excellent research and teaching in the field of condensed matter physics.

Key Responsibilities
  • Pursue internationally competitive research in condensed matter physics, with a focus on experimental investigations of magnetic systems, such as topological magnetic materials and quantum magnetism.
  • Develop clear plans for securing national and international funding opportunities to support research, collaborations, and dissemination.
  • Contribute to attracting and supervising postgraduate research students and enhancing the Department's commitment to its vibrant and inclusive postgraduate culture.
  • Play a role in relevant teaching and research supervision, contributing to the ongoing delivery of the teaching programmes and curriculum development.
  • Enhance the quality of the research environment in Condensed Matter Physics, the Department, the wider University, and beyond through collaborative research activity.
  • Deliver lectures, seminars, and tutorials at undergraduate and taught postgraduate levels, as well as proactively engaging in related activities such as academic assessment and advisory support.
  • Contribute to wider citizenship, including administrative duties, roles, and committees required for the delivery of the departmental activities across research and engage in and enhance the values of the Department.
  • Engage with the values of the Department of Physics.
  • Carry out other duties as specified by the Head of Department.
Requirements
  • PhD in Physics or a related subject.
  • High-quality research outputs, some of which have significant international recognition.
  • Personal research plan that aligns, supports, and enhances the Department's research portfolio in terms of the targeted research areas, research needs, and planned routes for funding applications.
  • Development and delivery of high-quality teaching that contributes to providing a supportive and enabling learning environment and curricula that encourage students to achieve their potential.
  • Active engagement in administrative and citizenship requirements of the Department and positively contribute to fostering a respectful environment, including a demonstrable commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.
Desirable Criteria
  • Research leadership experience, skills, and/or achievements that demonstrate experience of, or the potential to, contribute to the leadership of research groups and the mentoring of early career researchers.
  • PhD supervision experience.
  • Demonstrable evidence of the wider societal impact of the Candidate's research beyond their institution.
  • Income generation experience, including the development of successful research projects and high-quality research grant proposals.
  • Strategic teaching development experience, including the design of excellent teaching programmes that are research-informed and led.
  • Leadership experience in an academic context.
