Job Summary:

The Portsmouth City Council is seeking a skilled and dedicated individual to join our Vision and Hearing Team as a Communicator or Trainee Communicator. As a key member of our team, you will play a vital role in supporting deaf and hearing-impaired pupils in a school environment, ensuring they have access to the National Curriculum and the teaching and learning environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support deaf and hearing-impaired pupils with all aspects of communication in a school environment, across all key stages.
  • Work with class teachers to ensure pupils have access to the National Curriculum and the teaching and learning environment.
  • Use voice, Sign Supported English, and British Sign Language as appropriate to facilitate access, and prepare materials, contribute to reports, and review meetings.
  • Develop individual children's knowledge and use of signing to support language development, understanding, and broaden learning.
  • Assist pupils to become independent, confident learners, and foster independence and facilitate full inclusion into school life.

Requirements:

  • Experience of working in a learning setting supporting children, e.g., teaching assistant role.
  • Insight into your own behavior and professional boundaries with staff, parents, and pupils, and the ability to reflect on practice.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent self-management skills, including prioritizing, time management, recognizing limitations, and planning further professional development.
  • As a Communicator, you must be appropriately qualified with a Signature sign language level 2 qualification and knowledge of Signed English (i+ ii).
