Rheumatology Clinical Nurse Specialist Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and skilled Clinical Nurse Specialist to join our Rheumatology team at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. As a Clinical Nurse Specialist, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality patient care and contributing to the development of our service.

Main Responsibilities
  • Provide supportive care to patients with rheumatological diseases, working closely with the Rheumatology Nurse Specialist team.
  • Conduct basic clinical skills and provide support in drug monitoring, ensuring patient safety and accurate recording of data.
  • Respond to adverse drug events and abnormal blood results, adjusting treatment plans under supervision.
  • Ensure patient safety is maintained at all times, reporting adverse events and near misses in line with local policy.
  • Support the clinical nurse specialists in providing open access to patients through the Rheumatology helpline and emails, offering specialized advice and support.
  • Provide advice and support to patients and their families regarding the care and management of inflammatory joint disease.
  • Participate in health promotion and prevention of ill health, encouraging patients to adopt healthy lifestyles and self-care principles.
  • Participate in consultant and nurse-led clinics as required, contributing to the development of our service.
  • Comply with and fulfill the objectives of the Rheumatology service, taking responsibility for initiating objectives within the team.
  • Participate in audits and research to improve practice, as directed by line management.
  • Maintain professional competencies under NMC Revalidation and adhere to NMC Guidelines and standards for Professional Practice.
  • Attend mandatory training and ensure quality standards of care are maintained.
  • Develop and maintain effective communication networks with other health professionals, agencies, and stakeholders.
  • Ensure IT data is submitted promptly and accurately, adhering to organizational policies and clinical guidelines.
  • Develop clinical protocols and initiate quality standards of care to meet identified health needs.
  • Provide evidence-based practice for people with rheumatology conditions and their carers, focusing on the family unit.
  • Provide clinical advice, support, and training to other professionals, informal, and formal carers.
  • Raise concerns regarding standards and quality of care, patient safety, or lapses in professional conduct to line management and/or matron, in line with local and NMC guidelines.

  • Able to fulfill travel requirements of the role.
Qualifications/Training
  • Registered adult nurse with valid NMC registration.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Cannulation and venepuncture or willing to work towards.
  • Mentorship qualification or similar.
Experience
  • Experience of working within both medical and surgical environments.
  • Rheumatology education/experience.
Skills, Knowledge, and Competencies
  • Well-defined communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Effective time management.
  • Able to demonstrate sound clinical knowledge and skills.
  • Problem-solving skills relevant to the role.
  • Able to perform basic administration relevant to the role, including Microsoft Office.
